New move to fight rats in New York: Birth control pills

New York is taking a new approach to tackling the city's rat problem. Now the rodents will be provided with birth control pills, writes Sky News.

Containers of pellets containing contraceptives will be deployed starting next year. When female rats eat the pills, they will not be able to get pregnant for 45 days.

The company Senestech is behind the pills and believes that it is a humane way to reduce the number of rats without harming the environment or other animals, which can be the case with rat poison. Also, birth control pills are more effective than poison, as so many rats are born. According to the company's own calculations, the population drops by 95 percent with contraceptives.

According to estimates, three million rats live in New York.

Stranded astronaut duo
Now their ride home has arrived - only leaving in March

All summer, astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have been stranded on the International Space Station (ISS). Now the capsule that will give them a ride back to Earth has finally arrived at the space station, several media reports.

Crew-9, a copy of the Space X spacecraft Dragon, has now been flown "half-empty" up to the ISS, and docked during the night of Monday Swedish time. There were only two astronauts on board instead of four, so that Williams and Wilmore will have room during the return journey.

With the craft aboard were astronauts Aleksandr Gorbunov from Russia and Nick Hague from the United States. Their assignment runs until March next year, which means Williams and Wilmore will have to wait until then before going home. The original idea was that the two Americans would only spend eight days in space.

The charges against Le Pen
Marine Le Pen can be stopped from the presidential election

The French far-right's Marine Le Pen may be stopped from running in the next presidential election. This is reported by several media.

Le Pen and her National Assembly party are accused of cheating with assistant money from the European Parliament between 2004 and 2016.

The parliament has demanded back a total of around SEK 40 million, which it is believed that Le Pen and other representatives of the party used for completely different things than what was intended. A person listed as an assistant in parliament was actually the bodyguard and chauffeur of the party's aging portal figure – and Marine le Pen's father – Jean Marie Le Pen.

Marine Le Pen risks a fine, up to ten years in prison and a five-year suspension from public office.

National collection is on the rise in the opinion polls and sees this autumn's trial as an opportunity to once again portray itself as a victim of the establishment, states TT.

The death toll rises: At least 93 dead in the US after the hurricane

The death toll rises after Hurricane Helen's progress in several states in the United States. At least 93 people have been confirmed dead, writes AFP.

The hurricane hit the Florida coast in full force on Thursday with winds in excess of 60 meters per second. It then weakened but continued to cause extensive damage in states such as Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. 37 of the deaths have been reported from North Carolina.

- We are hearing about significant infrastructure damage to water systems, communications, roads, critical transport routes and homes that have been destroyed, says Deanne Criswell who is the head of the federal rescue agency FEMA.

Yesterday, almost 2.3 million households were without power as a result of the storm.

16 were kept as slaves - worked at British McDonalds

16 people have been held as slaves by a criminal gang in London, who, among other things, forced them to work at McDonalds, according to an investigation by the BBC.

The victims were lured from their native Czech Republic with promises of well-paid jobs in the UK.

According to the channel's review, the employer should not have acted, despite clear warning signals.
Among other things, four of the employees had their salary paid to a fifth person's account.

According to Chris Acourt, one of the police officers who worked on the investigation, there were "massive opportunities" for the employers to discover that something was not right. Instead, the 16 people were able to work shifts of up to 30 hours straight for over four years.

Another police officer who worked on the investigation told the BBC that the victims were "treated like cattle" and only given enough food and money to "continue to function".

Two brothers have been convicted of human trafficking.

- I feel partially exploited by McDonalds, because they did nothing, says one of the victims.

McDonald's in Great Britain states in a statement that they have tightened their procedures.

Analysis: War on several fronts - then Netanyahu will do well

Things are going well for Benjamin Netanyahu, despite his country being at war on several fronts. That's what CNN's Mick Krever writes in an analyzing text.

He points out that Israel's war-making is popular with large sections of the population and that Netanyahu's approval ratings have rebounded from a low just after October 7.

"Netanyahu is the winner. But it is also impossible to deny that the country is in crisis, despite the wave of euphoria after the assassination of Nasrallah".

Netanyahu has also been further strengthened by yesterday's appointment of rival Gideon Sa'ar as minister without portfolio, writes Yossi Verter in Haaretz.

Not only has one of the government's fiercest critics been silenced - Netanyahu has also gained four more votes in the Knesset. That at the price of a formal position without practical influence.

"He got it for sale price, with a double discount," writes Verter.

JD Vance "more Trump than Trump" before the debate

The Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance has refined the art of arguing with journalists and made it his signature in the election campaign, writes The Guardian.

- In many ways, he is more Trump than Trump, says a former Republican Party employee.

Ahead of the debate with Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, Vance thus appears to have turned around his rocky start and become an asset to the campaign, according to the paper.

However, opinion polls show that Walz is clearly the more popular of the two vice-presidential candidates.

- Vance will have to make a strong effort in the debate to regain his momentum, says Aaron Kall of the University of Michigan's debate association to Newsweek.

Walz's weakness before the debate with Vance: "Gets angry"

In the upcoming debate between vice presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz, the former is definitely the one with more debate experience. The newspaper's conclusion is that Walz, who himself pointed out debates as his weakness, is not bad at all.

"He can deliver sharp criticism and exudes an everydayness that helped him become the Democratic vice presidential candidate," writes the newspaper, which, however, states that Walz has a major weakness in debates: He sometimes gets shaken and angry when his opponent lands a verbal hit on a weak point.

- He gets angry, but I don't think he goes crazy and throws away all his cards, says Melvin Carter, mayor of St. Paul who has known Walz for almost 20 years.

Suspect of assassination attempt against Trump denies

Ryan Routh, who is suspected of attempted murder after a thwarted attack on Donald Trump, formally denies any crime. This is reported by several media.

Routh's note on Trump murder evidence in court: "I betrayed"

Ryan Routh, who is suspected of attempted murder after the averted murder of Donald Trump, is expected to appear in court in West Palm Beach on Monday. Among the prosecutors' evidence is an earlier letter from Routh in which he refers to another assassination attempt on the ex-president, writes Reuters.

"This is an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump but unfortunately, I let you down," Routh allegedly wrote, according to prosecutors.

Among the evidence, there should also be a self-published book by Routh that directs strong criticism against the ex-president.

Routh's lawyers have previously described the letter as a way for their client to "get attention".

More and more on the run: "Not even a dog would sleep here"

Haiti's capital has become a city of refugee camps, after criminal gangs took control of more than 80 percent, forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes. The Haitian Times reports.

- The place where I sleep is a place where not even a dog would want to sleep, says a 60-year-old woman to the newspaper. She lives in a refugee camp on the outskirts of the city along with thousands of others after a gang raid on her residential area earlier this year.

Haiti's hospitals and schools are overloaded to the breaking point, and in the refugee camps, many lack access to basic hygiene facilities.

- The security situation has paralyzed everything. People can't work. Children cannot go to school. Farmers can't even sell their crops, says Géraldine Edmond, director of a refugee camp in Port-au-Prince to the newspaper.

American strike threat

The union: All ports on the US East Coast go on strike

All ports on the US East Coast are prepared for strike action starting tomorrow, according to the union. And there are no negotiations scheduled before then, reports Reuters.

- They refuse to deal with almost half a century of wage suppression, the union says in a statement, according to the news agency.

Such a large strike - covering 72 percent of the country's port capacity - could have serious consequences for the American economy, says the Business Roundtable, which represents company management, according to Direkt.

President Joe Biden said on Sunday that he will not join a possible strike, reports Bloomberg.

Dock workers across the US prepare for strike

US dock workers from Texas in the south to Maine in the north are preparing for a massive strike at midnight, WSJ and CNBC report.

The port workers' union International Longshoremen's Association (LLA) demands that the members receive a larger share of the shipping companies' profits, which increased significantly both during the pandemic years and after the attacks in the Red Sea.

According to sources to the WSJ, the LLA is demanding wage increases of at least 77 percent over six years. The union has so far refused an offer from the employers of a 40 percent wage increase.

A port strike could cost the US 45 billion a day

The port strike looming on the US West Coast at midnight risks crippling large parts of US trade and reigniting inflation. It's warning more major employer organizations and urging President Joe Biden to intervene, the WSJ reports.

According to JP Morgan's analysts, the strike could cost the American economy upwards of 4.5 billion dollars a day, equivalent to roughly 45 billion kroner.

- The effects of the strike have already started, says asparagus importer Tim Ryan, who decided to fly in 68 tons of asparagus from Peru rather than risk them getting stuck at sea and rotting.

Walmart, Ikea and Samsung are some of the companies that are considered to be most exposed to the strike, data from the freight analysis company Import Genius shows, according to CNBC.

- Should the strike only last a week, it will stop the flow of hundreds of thousands of containers to the US, says Michael Kanko at Import Genius.

Why is it so quiet from Iran?

Can acquire nukes to prove strong

Quick version
  •  Iran has invested heavily in Hezbollah, which has now suffered its worst setback with the death of its leader and noticeable signs of weakness, but Tehran has yet to react concretely.
  • Israel's success against Hezbollah could reshape the balance of power in the Middle East, which Iran must consider in order not to lose influence among its proxy groups.
  •  Iran, which is accused of seeking nuclear weapons, could increase its efforts to acquire them as a security measure if it feels threatened, which would negatively affect the balance of power in the region.

So far, it has been strangely quiet from Tehran following the death of Hezbollah leader Nasrallah.

Is Iran about to sell out its old ally or are they just waiting for the right opportunity to retaliate?

There is a risk that a weakened Iran will get serious about its plans to acquire nuclear weapons.

It is still too early to make any final evaluation. But Israel's unusually successful attacks against Hezbollah and its leadership may be about to overturn the balance of power in the Middle East.

Iran has long controlled the Israel resistance in the region with the help of its proxy groups in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

Hezbollah's biggest setback

Now suddenly Hezbollah, probably the most powerful non-state actor in the world, has suffered its worst setback since the organization was founded in the 80s. Large parts of the leadership are affected by the pager attacks and the mythical leader Hassan Nasrallah is dead.

Iran has invested countless billions of kroner in building up the Hezbollah militia and providing them with advanced weapons. Still, reactions to the crackdown on the group are strikingly restrained from Iran's ayatollahs.

Nasrallah was killed on Friday. But still Iran has not retaliated.

Chaos and confusion

True, Hezbollah continues to fire rockets at Israel, but very few of them are advanced homing robots. This despite the fact that Hezbollah is believed to have thousands at its disposal. If you fired enough of them at once, you would overwhelm the Israeli air defenses and could cause great damage in Israel.

That there is chaos and confusion within Hezbollah is easy to understand, but for Iran it should be important to show some form of concrete support for its support team that it has spent so much time, energy and money building up.

Signs of weakness

How else is it to be interpreted by the other proxy groups such as the militias in Syria and the Houthi rebels in Yemen?

The proxy groups are extremely important for Iran's position as a regional power. Countries like arch-enemy Saudi Arabia will interpret it as a noticeable sign of weakness if Iran does not act in any way against Israel.

When Israel bombed the Iranian consulate in Damascus earlier this year, Iran responded after a few weeks by sending more than 300 robots against Israel. But it announced its attack and thus gave Israel the opportunity to shoot down most of the robots. Everything to avoid an escalation.

Should a similar attack be directed at Israel again without warning, a strong response from Israel must be expected. Therefore, Iran may not dare to retaliate.

Possibly, the Islamic regime in Tehran is finding it difficult to decide how to act without the consequence being the big war in the region that everyone fears but at the same time says they want to avoid.

Popular resistance

Perhaps the answer will eventually come in the form of an act of terrorism directed against Israeli interests somewhere in the world. A Jewish center and the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires were attacked in 1992 when a truck bomb exploded outside. Iran was singled out as the culprit, but it was agents from Hezbollah who carried out the deed.

It came a month after Israel killed then-Hezbollah leader Abbas al-Musawi. In retrospect, it was hardly an assassination that in any way weakened Hezbollah.

One reason why Iran hesitates to retaliate may be internal contradictions within the leadership and the powerful Revolutionary Guard. Both know that there is great popular resistance among large groups in Iran against the Islamist rule. Perhaps the regime is afraid of being overthrown if it is drawn into a major war with Israel.

Nuclear weapons

The change in power relations that Israel's offensive against Hezbollah appears to have brought about can also have far-reaching security policy consequences.

Iran has long been accused of trying to acquire nuclear weapons. The regime denies it, but the world believes it has overwhelming evidence of the country's intentions. Since Donald Trump terminated the nuclear deal in 2018, Iran has increased its production of highly enriched uranium.
Irans ledare ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran's leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Photo: AP
International experts regularly warn that Iran is only months away from being able to build nuclear weapons. Since UN experts can no longer inspect Iran's nuclear energy facilities as before, it is difficult to know what the situation is.

Israel has previously had plans to attack Iran's nuclear energy facilities. Now that things are going Israel's way, Netanyahu may even be prepared to attack Iran.

If the Iranian regime feels its existence is threatened, the risk of going ahead with the nuclear weapons plans increases. The aim is to obtain a security guarantee and at the same time increase its ability to threaten Israel. In terms of conventional warfare, it is clear that Iran is no match for Israel.

Dangerous change

If Iran acquires nuclear weapons, it means a very dangerous change in the balance of power in the region. Then Saudi Arabia would immediately start developing nuclear weapons as well.

So even if there is silence from Iran in the near future, it is no guarantee that we will not see a dangerous escalation in the future.

Sources: Israel has informed the US of "imminent" ground invasion

Israel has informed the US that it is preparing a "limited ground invasion" in Lebanon that could start "immediately". This is stated by sources for the Washington Post.

According to the sources, the invasion would be smaller than Israel's offensive against Lebanon in 2006 and focus on "wiping out" the Hezbollah militia infrastructure closest to the Israeli border.

New Hezbollah leader: "We are ready for ground invasion"

Hezbollah is ready to face an Israeli ground invasion of Lebanon. This is stated by the terrorist-classified group's acting leader, Naim Qassem, according to Reuters.

- We are ready if the Israelis decide to enter by land and the resistance forces are ready for ground combat.

It is the first time Qassem has spoken out since succeeding Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Friday.

Israel has stated that it has prepared plans for a ground invasion, but has not yet confirmed if or when one will be launched.

Hezbollah: New leader to be appointed as soon as possible

Naim Qassem, deputy leader of Hezbollah, says that a new leader of the militia group should be appointed at the "earliest possible opportunity".

He says so in a speech on the Shia Muslim group's own television channel al-Manar, reports AFP.

Qassem says the new leader will be chosen based on "Hezbollah's internal mechanisms" and that the election will be "clear and unanimous."

- Rest assured, victory is our friend, we just need a little patience, he also says.

The speech is the first of its kind since Hezbollah's top leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed on Friday.

Naim Qassem, 71, was involved in Hezbollah's founding in the 1980s. He has been secretary general of the group since 1991.

Details: Ground invasion of Lebanon shortly

Oskar Forsberg

Updated 18.19 | Published 6:00 p.m

Israel is planning an attack on Lebanon with ground troops.

According to American and Israeli media, the invasion is imminent.

However, it will be smaller than the attack against Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2006, according to information.

Quick versionIsrael has indicated to the US that it is planning a limited ground operation in Lebanon.

The invasion will begin shortly, says a source to the Washington Post.

According to the Washington Post, the goal is to knock out Hezbollah's military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

“Israel has plans for a limited operation that is imminent. The Americans are informed. There will not be a new Gaza," says an Israeli source with insight into the planning.

Raids at the border

It will be about raids on villages and settlements near the border, where it is suspected that Hezbollah has weapons that could threaten Israelis on the other side of the border.

During the day today, minor attacks have already been carried out in southern Lebanon.

Special forces are said to have carried out attacks against various strategically important locations, according to the Jerusalem Post and the Wall Street Journal.

The attacks by the units are seen as a clear indication that a larger attack is imminent.

Biden worried

Joe Biden and his administration are reportedly concerned that the ongoing conflict against Hezbollah will grow larger and become a long war.

They will discuss this concern with the Israelis.

Israel killed Hezbollah's longtime leader Hasan Nasrallah in an airstrike in Beirut on Friday. Israeli strikes have also killed at least six of Nasrallah's top commanders and officials in the past 10 days.

However, there seems to be a difference of opinion within the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) as to how much of a blow it has really dealt to Hezbollah.

According to the Jerusalem Post, several top figures within the IDF have claimed that Hezbollah suffered very large losses, while others have called the actions "hubris" and warned that the terrorist group still has great capacity.

In the last 24 hours, 136 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to the authorities.

At least 84 people have been confirmed dead in several states in the United States after the advance of Hurricane Helene, with massive flooding as a result.

American media reports of "biblical destruction" and "apocalyptic scenes".

Millions of people are without power. Over the weekend, US President Joe Biden called the hurricane's devastation "overwhelming" and promised to send aid.

With a large number of people in need of support, many of them without insurance, the civilian population is also pitching in. One of them is Janalea England from Steinhatchee, Florida, who has turned her fish market into a place where those in need can get help with supplies.

- I have never seen so many homeless people as now, she says.

Sitting in Putin's lap - can change Europe

Austria
Far-right successes a threat to Ukraine

Wolfgang Hansson

This is a commenting text.
Analysis and positions are the writer's.

Published 21.02

Quick version

  • The far-right FPÖ party has become the largest party in Austria according to polls, but its chances of forming a government are slim as other parties refuse to cooperate under leader Herbert Kickl.
  • The FPÖ's success reflects a wider trend of right-wing extremism in Europe, particularly with hard-line stances against asylum immigration and a desire to dismantle the EU's asylum policy.
  • The FPÖ's pro-Russian stance and resistance to supporting Ukraine may threaten the unity within the EU on aid and sanctions, which risks undermining support for Ukraine if the trend continues.

The extreme right becomes the largest party in yet another country in Europe.

Their successes risk destroying the agreement on support for Ukraine.

Then it is a small consolation that the Austrian FPÖ will probably not be allowed to form a government despite the election victory.

There is still some form of decency limit when it comes to cooperation with far-right parties.

So despite the fact that the FPÖ, with its 29 percent according to polling station polls, will for the first time become the largest party in a parliamentary election, there is little chance that they will be able to form the government.

Extreme Russian friendliness

The Christian Democrats, ÖVP, who become second largest, refuse to cooperate with FPÖ if party leader Herbert Kickl demands to be prime minister.

Herbert Kickl.
Herbert Kickl. Photo: Heinz-Peter Bader / AP

The reason is that even the conservative ÖVP believes that he is too extreme in his Russian friendliness and in his hatred of immigrants.

So the only chance for the FPÖ to gain power is if Kickl steps aside and hands over the prime ministership to someone else.

That's exactly what happened in the Netherlands when Geert Wilder's Freedom Party won the election at the end of last year. After months of probing, Wilders realized that no one was prepared to be part of a government in which he was prime minister. Sensationally, he swallowed personal pride and agreed to step aside so that his party would still gain government power.

Whether Kickl is as selfless remains to be seen. Must believe it.

FPÖ ser ut att bli störst i valet i Österrike.

So once again we may have a situation where we have a winner in an election in Europe but where someone else still gets the power of government. How good is it for trust in democracy?

Recently, a left-wing coalition won the elections in France, but President Macron gave the task of becoming prime minister to a right-wing man, Michel Barnier.

Excluded

German right-wing extremists Alternative for Germany recently won the state elections in Thuringia. But they seem to be barred from the possibility of governing.

Now there are many indications that the same fate will befall the FPÖ.

But the fact that they are excluded from government power cannot hide the fact that the extreme right is on the rise in Europe.

The winner of the election above all changes is the immigration policy. The FPÖ stands for a rock-hard line where Austria's borders should in principle be closed to asylum immigration. At the same time, they want to deport everyone who has had their asylum application rejected or who has not managed to integrate.

FPÖ wants to tear up the asylum pact that the EU has just adopted and further tighten the rules.

The chance that they will succeed is small at the moment, but the FPÖ contributes to undermining respect for the asylum system that was adopted after the Second World War.

Given the success of far-right parties around Europe, it is difficult to see how this asylum system will survive in the long run. It is probably only a matter of time before the rules are eroded even more.

But perhaps even more important for the maintenance of the liberal world order is that the FPÖ sits on Vladimir Putin's lap. Alongside Viktor Orban's Hungary, it is difficult to find a more pro-Russian party in Europe.

FPÖ wants to continue importing cheap gas from Russia. They oppose the harsh sanctions against the Kremlin and want to put an end to arms aid to Ukraine.

Revolutionary changes

As long as you do not get government power, none of these views will have much impact in Austria, but it shows that the strong support for Ukraine around Europe is about to crumble. The time when it was self-evident to support arms shipments and financial aid to Ukraine is over in many of Europe's leading countries. The longer the war drags on, the more difficult it will be to maintain EU support for Ukraine despite all the words of solidarity spoken in Brussels.

Decisions on sanctions, arms shipments and financial aid to Ukraine require unanimous decisions. It is enough for one country to start opposing the support and the EU's hitherto united front can crack. The more countries where the far-right and pro-Russian parties advance, the more difficult it will be to keep support alive.

This is happening at the same time as the US is increasingly faltering. Joe Biden continues to oppose Ukraine being allowed to use the weapons sent by the West to attack targets deep inside Russia. This for fear of provoking Russia.

Should Donald Trump also win the presidential election in the United States, large parts of the American support risk being withdrawn.

The result in Austria shows that Europe is facing potentially disruptive changes.
