Milei questions upcoming election: "A mini-Trump"

The Argentine presidential candidate Javier Milei follows in several ways in the footsteps of former American president Donald Trump, writes the New York Times.  

Like Trump, Milei has played on widespread discontent with a political elite, claiming that he alone will fix the country's deep economic problems. Milei has also gone from being a controversial TV personality, who no one really took seriously, to election favourite.  

- He is clearly a mini-Trump, says Federico Finchelstein, who researches the extreme right in various countries. 

In his last interview before the election, Milei suggests that there is reason to believe that there may be electoral fraud and the theft of votes on Sunday, writes Argentine Pagina 12. Following the statements, the federal prosecutor Ramiro González has opened an investigation into the matter.

Young voters are less: "Had the problems all my life"  

It looks like it's going to be a rollercoaster in Argentina on Sunday.  

 

The electorate is deeply divided and many are still unsure of how to vote, writes Reuters.  

 

The choice is between incumbent Finance Minister Sergio Massa, right-wing populist Javier Milei and conservative Patricia Bullrich, who all have vastly different visions for the country.  

 

Buenos Aires resident Soledad Sanchez has not yet decided who will get her vote.  

 

- I will vote for the option that seems the least bad. But I can say it's 50-50 until Sunday.  

 

Milei gathered a surprising amount of support in the primary election, mainly because he managed to win over young voters who were saddened by the poor economic situation in the country. 

 

- I have lived my whole life with these problems, says 24-year-old Agustin Geist.
