Shots have been fired near Donald Trump's golf club in Florida.

The ex-president was on the course to play golf and was taken away by security personnel.

"Trump is safe," says his spokesman Steven Cheung.

Shots have been fired near Donald Trump's golf club in Palm Beach, Florida, his campaign team said.

According to AP sources, the ex-president was on the course's fifth hole when the Secret Service spotted a gunman and opened fire.

The gunman then fled the scene in a car. Shortly afterwards, the car was stopped in another part of the city and the person was arrested by the police.

Trump was immediately taken to safety, according to  NBC. The golf club has been put on lockdown, according to CNN.

"Trump is safe after the shooting in his vicinity, We have no further information at this time," said his spokesman Steven Cheung in a statement.

The Secret Service confirms it is investigating the incident.

"The Secret Service, in cooperation with Palm Beach County police, is investigating an incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe," writes spokesman Anthony Guglielmi on X.

No one should have been injured in the shooting, the police told AP.

AK-47 found

A large police operation is underway in the area and the roads around the golf club have been closed.

According to CNN sources, a bag containing a body camera and an AK-47 rifle was found near the golf course.

"The camera indicates that the individual wanted to film the sequence of events," a source told CNN.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham says he spoke by phone with Trump after the incident:

“He is one of the strongest people I have ever known. He is in good spirits and more determined than ever to save our country," he writes on X.

"I'M SURE"

Shortly before 10 p.m., Donald Trump spoke about the drama:

"Shots have been fired near me, but before the rumors start spreading out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND FINE!", he writes and continues:

“Nothing will stop me. I will NEVER give up!”.

The White House says in a statement that it is relieved to hear that Trump escaped unharmed.

Just over two months ago, Donald Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt during a campaign speech in Pennsylvania.
