US: Has attacked Iran's Revolutionary Guard as "punishment"

US forces have attacked Iran's Revolutionary Guard in response to the killing of two American soldiers on Friday in Jordan, writes the military command Centcom on X. One soldier is still missing and four needed medical treatment.

Centcom already announced on Saturday that it would launch new airstrikes against Iran to "quickly punish" the country. They believe that this is the first time the US has directly targeted the Revolutionary Guard's various military facilities, writes AP.

Centcom writes this morning that they have ended the eighth night of attacks against Iran and that they have focused on coastal surveillance and air defense facilities as well as weapons depots in the country.

Explosions have been heard in the coastal city of Bandar Abbas and on Qeshmön, according to Iranian state media, writes CNN. Above all, it was civilian infrastructure that was targeted.

Iran is also said to have attacked power and desalination plants in Kuwait.

Analysis: US and Iran signed a misunderstanding

It was not a memorandum of understanding that Iran and the US signed in mid-June – it was a “misunderstanding”. This is what political advisor David Raikow says in a text in Foreign Policy.

According to him, the agreement – ​​which he calls “deeply flawed” – was surprisingly brief compared to similar agreements in other conflicts. Raikow points out in particular that it lacked the details that usually reduce the risk that the parties interpret an agreement differently.

“Therefore, it is actually possible that the Iranian leaders seriously believe that they have lived up to the agreement and that the US has ignored important parts of it”, writes Raikow.

But his interpretation is contradicted by expert Vali Nasr, who speaks out in an analysis in The Guardian.

"I don't think this is a misunderstanding. I think this is exactly what Trump wanted," says Nasr, claiming that the US only agreed to the ceasefire in order to replenish its oil reserves.
