New attacks between the US and Iran – seventh night
The US military says it attacked Iranian weapons depots and military infrastructure – Iran claims to have attacked US bases.
For the seventh night in a row, the countries have now targeted each other.
The US launched a new wave of attacks on Iran on Friday evening. Explosions have – as earlier this week – been heard in the cities of Bandar Abbas and Ahvaz as well as on the island of Qeshm.
Iranian state media reports that at least three people have been killed and eight injured as a result of the attacks.
Various reports of explosions
The Revolutionary Guard in Iran also stated that two tankers collided with mines in the Strait of Hormuz late on Friday. Details about the alleged incident are still scarce – and it is unclear what damage the ships may have sustained – but Iran claims that explosions occurred and that fires broke out.
The US military command Centcom, for its part, calls Iran's claims about the ships and the explosions "false".
"In order to protect their assets and, above all, their lives, crews should not be misled and enter the minefield", the Revolutionary Guard stated in a statement and also claimed that four ships were stopped from passing through the strait.
Iranian counterattacks
The American attacks were completed shortly before 4 am, Swedish time. By then, Iranian surveillance facilities, logistics infrastructure and weapons depots had been hit, according to Centcom.
As in previous nights, Iran has launched retaliatory strikes against US bases across the Middle East, and both Kuwait and Jordan said they had activated their air defense systems overnight. According to the Jordanian military, ten Iranian missiles were shot down in the country's territory, without causing any damage to people or buildings.
According to Iran, targets in Bahrain were also attacked overnight.
