Half of US states sue administration over tariffs

Half of US states are choosing to sue Donald Trump's administration for the latest threat to impose trade tariffs, several media outlets report.

- After losing in the Supreme Court, the administration is once again trying, illegally, to raise taxes on families and businesses with a new round of tariffs, says Letitia James, general counsel for the state of New York, according to TT.

The previous import tariffs against 59 countries and the EU were declared invalid in the US Supreme Court.

Reform UK proposes military action against asylum seekers

If they win the election, the British far-right party Reform UK wants to stop asylum seekers with "the largest military action in the English Channel since World War II". This is what party leader Nigel Farage said during a press conference according to Reuters.

Farage says the operation would stop boats in the Channel and send asylum seekers back to the French side.

Former paratrooper Andrew Fox at the Henry Jackson Society think tank told the news agency that it is not possible for Britain to station warships in French waters, seize boats or allow passengers to disembark in Calais without French approval.

– The plan sounds magnificent, as long as you know nothing about the ships, the sailors, France or the law, he says.

The Hungarian search for a new president is not without suggestions, but there is a process for how an individual candidate should be selected, writes The Guardian.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar called in July for suggestions from the public on who should take over after the outgoing Tamás Sulyok. However, there were no set procedures for how the suggestions should be submitted. Therefore, individual citizens took matters into their own hands and created their own polls on their private social media pages.

Since then, a wide range of candidates have emerged: lingerie models, bodybuilders and reality TV stars. However, the most popular seem to be pensioner András “Hide the Pain Harold” Arató, Nobel laureate Katalin Karikó and inventor Ernő Rubik.

It is not yet clear which candidates will ultimately be voted on.

More nuclear power may be closed – low water in the Danube

The low water levels in the Danube River may force Romania to close another reactor at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. This is reported by TT. The country's Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared a national state of emergency on Monday and has urged the population to reduce electricity use.

The water flow at the nuclear power plant has dropped to 1,500 cubic meters per second, which corresponds to a third of the normal flow for the season. On Monday, Romania's military blasted away rocks at the Bala Canal to direct more water flow to the nuclear power plant's cooling system, but a second reactor may still need to be shut down, according to Reuters. 

Prosecutors investigate suicides in French departments

The Paris public prosecutor has opened an investigation after two French civil servants committed suicide and two more survived attempts to take their own lives in the past year, French Inter radio reports.

The two civil servants who died worked in different departments, one of which was close to the prime minister's office.

According to the radio station, allegations of workplace bullying have occurred in dozens of departments.

- My client was treated as if she were invisible. She was teased and mocked like in a schoolyard, she was ostracized, says the lawyer for an employee who tried to take her own life.
