Iran expands “forbidden zone” in Arabian Sea

Iran announces that a “forbidden zone” will be introduced in the Arabian Sea and, among other things, apply to parts of the sea outside Oman.

This expands Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz in the ongoing war with the United States.

The announcement came from Revolutionary Guard spokesman Hossein Mohebi, who said that the exact area will be announced shortly.

“If a ship travels in the area without having coordinated its journey, it will be subject to our sanctions,” he said on Iranian state television.

Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz since the war began with American and Israeli attacks on February 28. The United States has responded by blockaded Iranian ports.

Talks are ongoing between Iran and Oman over temporary shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. On Tuesday, Tehran said that ten ships, which did not coordinate their passage with Iran, had been attacked.
