Iran and US Exchange New Attacks
Iran and the US have exchanged new attacks in and around the Strait of Hormuz, international media reports. Iran claims to have fired missiles at US ships and a base in Jordan, according to the state news agency Irna. At the same time, the US says it has destroyed five Iranian oil tankers.
– Every time they do it, or try to do it, they will lose tankers, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters during a visit to Colombia on Tuesday, according to the AP.
Jordan says 18 Iranian missiles were shot down. Iran's Revolutionary Guards claim that several US ships and oil tankers have been attacked.
Reports of new attacks between the US and Iran
An Iranian oil tanker has been hit by a US missile off the island of Kharg in the Persian Gulf, Iranian state media reported according to AFP. No people were reportedly injured.
Iranian media also reported that explosions were heard in the port city of Jask near the Strait of Hormuz, but did not provide other details.
At the same time, sources told the Wall Street Journal that Iran attacked US ships yesterday, but that the US military had covered it up.
No ships were reportedly hit, but concerns are now growing that Iran's attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and that they may be assisted by China or Russia, according to the sources.
US Response: “Underwater Drone Failure”
A US underwater drone has suffered a technical failure in the waters off Iran. This is stated by Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins, who neither confirms nor denies Iran’s claim that it was seized, writes AFP.
– The defective drone was an older model that neither collected sensitive data nor carried classified sonar or radar equipment, says Hawkins.
Earlier in the evening, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said that they had seized a state-of-the-art, unmanned US submarine in a “complex operation” in the Strait of Hormuz.
