The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson resigns. 

 

He made the announcement at a news conference outside 10 Downing Street.

 

- It is clear that it is Parliament's will that a new Conservative leader is appointed and therefore also a new Prime Minister, Johnson says. 

 

British media have during the day reported Boris Johnson will resign as party leader for the Conservative Party today. 

 

Shortly after lunch, it is clear that the 58-year-old's time in power is over. 

 

To the assembled press, Johnson announced that he was resigning. The Prime Minister will continue in office "until a new leader is in place". 

 

- The reason why I have struggled so hard lately to deliver was not only because I wanted it but because I felt that it was my job, my assignment and my obligation to you, he says.

 

- I agree with [party leader] Sir Graham Brady that the process of appointing a new leader should begin now, Johnson continues.

He promised to give his full support to his successor. 

 

- To the new leader, I say that I will give you as much support as I can. He also spoke directly to the British people. 

 

- And to you, the British people. I know there are many people who are now out of breath and maybe some who are disappointed. I want you to know that I am sorry that I am giving up the best job in the world, he says. 

 

Finally, he promised to continue serving the British during his last days in the post. 

 

"Even if everything feels dark now, the future is golden," Johnson said before concluding the press conference to applause.

The decision was made in the morning 

 

The Guardian reports that the decision was made this morning. According to several British media, the Prime Minister spoke with the party's chairman Sir Graham Brady during the morning where Johnson announced that he agrees to resign as party leader. 

 

According to British information, a new leader of the party can be appointed in the autumn. On the other hand, several of the high-ranking people in the Conservative Party want to see a change of power immediately. The news comes after hectic days in the country where several people have left the Prime Minister's government due to dissatisfaction. So far, 59 people have left the government.
