- I do not care if they have weapons. They're not here to hurt me. Remove the damned security checks. They can march towards the Capitol from here. Let my people in.

This is what Donald Trump said to the Secret Service on the morning of January 6, 2021, before his speech in which he warmed up the protesters who then stormed the congress building.

Witness from the inside

The information comes from Cassidy Hutchinson, a former employee of Donald Trump's chief of staff, who was questioned by the January 6 committee on Tuesday. Hutchinson is an important witness, because she was there in the White House when it all happened.

For example, when one day in the autumn of 2020 she heard noises and went to the president's dining room, to see ketchup running down the wall and a broken porcelain installation underneath. The president had thrown his lunch against the wall because he was furious that the justice minister was not helping to spread his lies about election fraud.

According to Hutchinson, this was not the first time Trump threw food or turned the tablecloth. But the president also resorted to violence in other ways.

Tried to take a stranglehold

After Trump on the day of the coup called on his mob to march towards Congress, he himself wanted to follow. Therefore, he became furious with Secret Service agent Bobby Engel, who told him they had to return to the White House when they were in the president's limousine.

- I'm damn president, take me to the Capitol now, Trump is said to have said. For then having tried to take control of the steering wheel. When Engel grabbed the president's arm, Trump is said to have tried to strangle his own security guard.

Hutchinson's testimony clarifies what President Trump wanted to achieve on January 6. He wanted to be in place to lead his armed followers himself. As taken from any CIA-initiated coup in a Latin American country.

The basis is inequality

The courage of Cassidy Hutchinson, Liz Cheney and other Republicans who dare to expose Trump's lies is crucial to the survival of American democracy. But we who believe in solidarity and equality have an even greater task.

Donald Trump could be elected president because the economic divide has widened. Trump offered simple solutions, blaming the lost faith in the future on Mexicans, Muslims, feminists and black civil rights activists.

Trump blamed everyone but stormy capitalists like himself, who made billions on deregulation and tax cuts. His right-wing policies made the situation even worse for many of the workers' voters who voted for him.

Democracy must be defended

On January 6, 2021, democracy was at stake in the world's most powerful country. The coup plotter is still at large, and campaigning too hard to be re-elected president.

What happened in the United States can happen in other countries as well. Here and there, we who believe in democracy must be prepared to stand up and defend it against its enemies.

The hearings on the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 are in full swing at prime time on American television. The hearings are chaired by a special review committee. It will produce a report on when Donald Trump's supporters broke into the Congress building to stop the appointment of Joe Biden as the new president.

Viewers have seen testimonies from police officers who slipped in blood as they defended the congress building from the coup attempt. Trump's then Attorney General William Barr has testified that his boss "lost touch with reality" and rejected the allegation of electoral fraud. And the ex-president's daughter Ivanka Trump, who held a position in the White House, has said that her father is wrong that the election was stolen.

The committee has questioned election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, who were subjected to an avalanche of hatred after Trump accused them of election fraud. They are still worried about the death threats and harassment of Trump's supporters.

Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has said he wanted Trump to win but refused to take part in his conspiracy to retain power. Raffensperger said no when the president called in person and tried to pressure him to "find the 11,000 votes that are missing".

The committee is expected to make its recommendations in September. The question that remains to be solved is who knew what, and when they knew it. Then it is up to the Department of Justice to decide whether to proceed with a regular trial to demand responsibility from Trump and his aides.

The United States is seen by many as a model for freedom and democracy. If a totalitarian regime were to gain a foothold in the world's most powerful country, it would be devastating for the entire planet and for all of us who live here.

Therefore, it is especially important that those responsible for the attempted coup in Washington DC are brought to justice and convicted of their crimes.

Donald Trump tried to convince the world that the election was stolen. But the congressional hearings reveal the naked truth. It was Donald Trump who tried to steal the election from the American people.
