The mastermind behind 7 October survived seven assassination attempts
Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif had a long and secretive career within the terrorist group Hamas in Gaza, writes Reuters in a review.
On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that Deif had been confirmed dead following an attack on Khan Yunis in July.
Deif, 58, has been wanted by Israel for decades and survived seven Israeli attempts to kill him, the last being in 2021.
Deif has been central to the construction of Hamas tunnels and knowledge of making bombs. Israel has held him personally responsible for the deaths of large numbers of Israelis in suicide bombings over the years.
He is said to have been part of a small circle that planned the terrorist attack on October 7, in which 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were taken hostage, according to Israeli estimates.

The minister crosses Deif's picture: "Bin Laden of Gaza"
Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says the killing of Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas' military branch in Gaza, is a major step toward crushing the terror group.
In a post on X, he calls Deif "the bin Laden of Gaza" and publishes a picture in which he uses a black marker pen to cross out the terrorist leader's picture on a board that appears to show the Hamas organization.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich writes that the collapse of Hamas is closer than ever and quotes a biblical passage: "I pursued my enemies and overtook them, I did not turn back until they were annihilated."

Israel: Hamas leader Mohammed Deif has been killed
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) writes in a statement that Hamas leader Mohammed Deif has been killed.
Deif is the leader of Hamas's military branch and has been singled out as one of the masterminds behind the October 7 terrorist attack. He was the target of an Israeli attack on the town of Khan Younis in Gaza three weeks ago.
The IDF writes in a statement that it received intelligence that Deif was "eliminated" in the attack.
Another Hamas leader, Rafa Salama, was killed in the attack on Khan Yunis.
Hezbollah: Israel does not understand the line they crossed
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warns Israel that there will "definitely" be a response to the attack that killed Fuad Shukr, reports Haaretz.
- They do not understand what line they have crossed. We have entered a new phase in all respects.
Shukr was Hezbollah's top military commander and Nasrallah's right-hand man. He was killed in an attack in Beirut on Tuesday, and his remains were found in the rubble the following day.
Nasrallah further states that Hezbollah's rocket fire on Israel from southern Lebanon will resume on Friday.
