Gripne Telegram CEO
The CEO on the allegations: We will improve things

Telegram CEO and co-founder Pavel Durov has spoken out for the first time about the allegations leveled against him. He does this in a post on his own messaging service, AFP reports. He describes the accusations as surprising and misguided.

"Using laws written before the smartphone era to charge a CEO with crimes committed by third parties on the platform he is responsible for is a misguided approach," he writes.

He admits that the platform has grown so quickly that it has become easier for criminals to abuse Telegram.

"That's why I've made it my personal goal to make sure we improve things significantly on this."

The tech billionaire was arrested on August 24 outside Paris and released on Wednesday. He is suspected of not having acted when criminals use Telegram to commit crimes.

The Southport stabbing
Man jailed for nine years after British riots

A 27-year-old man in Great Britain has been sentenced to nine years in prison for arson after setting fire to a garbage can at the entrance to a hotel where asylum seekers were staying in connection with the violent protests in the country this summer, several media reports.

The hotel was threatened and attacked by around 400 people during the riots that gripped several towns following the murder of three young girls in Southport on 29 July. The riots, which included both violence, arson and racist attacks, started because of false information about the perpetrator's background.

Approximately 1,300 people have been arrested in connection with the investigation into the riots. It is the longest sentence handed down so far for the riots.

Murder at a German police station is being investigated as a terrorist crime

Early on Friday morning, a 29-year-old man entered a police station in Linz, Germany, and threatened to kill staff with a machete, writes Der Spiegel.

The perpetrator was not able to access any staff and was locked in a room. He was able to be apprehended without anyone being physically harmed.

Prosecutors suspect that the act may have been motivated by Islamism. During the act, he shouted "Allahu akbar" repeatedly and during a raid in his home a flag with the symbol of the terrorist sect IS was found.
