The presidential election in Romania

The Voter: We haven't had a good president since '89

That the ultra-nationalist candidate Calin Georgescu appears to be the one to challenge the social democrat Marcel Ciolacu in the next round of the presidential election in Romania was an announcement that was both sudden and unexpected, writes Politico.

Polling stations earlier on Sunday evening indicated that liberal candidate Elena Lasconi would face Ciolacu in the second round.

However, Lasconi says to Reuters that she still hopes that the foreign votes will once again turn the tide.

- But as you can see, the election is very even, so let's wait for the result tomorrow before we celebrate.

The 20-year-old voter Ecaterina Nawadia tells The Guardian that many of her generation vote for change - but often in different directions.

- Since the revolution in 1989, we haven't had a single really good president.

Won the first round: "The people cry for peace"

It will be the extreme right's pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu and center candidate Elena Lasconi who will settle in the second and decisive round of the Romanian presidential election. This is reported by AFP.

Among other things, Georgescu has campaigned for an end to aid from Romania to Ukraine.

- Today, the Romanian people have raised their voices for peace. And they shouted very loudly, extremely loudly, he said late Monday night.

Gerogescu's strong victory in the election on Sunday was not predicted by polling stations and was described by several media as a surprise.
