“Dark trio has formed a pact – wants to crush Europe”
Swedish editorial pages focus on Sunday on the political situation in Europe with the war in Ukraine in the background. In Hungary, Viktor Orbán is running an election campaign full of exaggerations and scaremongering in which the Ukrainian freedom struggle is painted as wasted. Brussels is seen as the real enemy and Orbán is supported by the Trump administration, writes Dagens Nyheter.
“It is a dark trio: Orbán, Putin and Trump are forming a pact to crush Europe,” the newspaper writes, noting that the Hungarians have a chance to vote out the prime minister in the spring elections.
Expressen’s editorial team writes that large companies and state pension funds are too quick to adapt to activists’ demands for “goodness.” The newspaper takes as an example how equity funds have opted out of weapons manufacturing but not a company like Nestlé, which still has production in Russia. Trying to collect plus points with interest groups risks playing into Putin's hands, the newspaper believes.
The fact that it was 40 years since the assassination of Olof Palme is also noted. Lena Andersson writes for SvD that the distance to the assassination has not increased over the years, while Anders Lindberg focuses on the fact that hatred against Palme still lives on within the right.
"His political legacy is constantly under attack," he writes.
Sanctions
Belgium has stopped a ship from the Russian shadow fleet
Belgian special forces have boarded and seized an oil tanker from the Russian shadow fleet, AFP reports.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot writes on X that the ship was stopped in the North Sea.
In the post, Prevot thanks the special forces who carried out the operation in which the G7, Nordic and Baltic parties participated.
"As long as Russia continues its war against Ukraine, we will continue to act. Sanctions only matter if they are enforced. Today we did," he concludes the post with.
