Analysis: Libya has stood still since Gaddafi died
Libya's population and infrastructure are suffering great damage from the political chaos in the country since dictator Mohammar Gaddafi was deposed and killed in 2011, something that is clearly felt in the flood disaster in Darnah. TV4's Lisa Grenfors draws that conclusion in an analysis.
The fact that two rival governments govern each part of the country means that there is no functioning system for coordinating relief efforts or maintaining infrastructure.
"No one has seen any reason to invest when the apolitical governance has been constantly challenged," she notes.
AP writes that Libya is the only country in the world that does not have a climate strategy for this type of scenario, which, according to an analyzing text, makes the population even more exposed to this type of natural disaster. For example, the dams that collapsed lacked a warning system and there was also no evacuation plan.
According to analysts, the port city has also found itself between the two rival governments, which could be devastating in the coming disaster response

The Darnah disaster: Flood surge from the mountains as the dams collapsed
At least 6,000 people have died following the flooding disaster in eastern Libya and at least 10,000 are still missing, according to the Red Cross.
The port city of Darnah has been particularly hard hit as two dams in the mountains above the city collapsed during the heavy rain. This led to an estimated 30 million cubic meters of water sweeping over the most densely populated parts of the city.
According to the city's deputy mayor, Ahmed Madroud, the dams have not received maintenance for two decades and the infrastructure was not built to withstand this type of storm. This is reported by Al Jazeera.
The storm that hit Libya this weekend was storm Daniel, which hit Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria in early September.
