Political situation in Indonesia

Leader: Takes over finished government - "step on the gas"

Indonesia's new president Prabowo Subianto does not have to start from scratch, as he was a close ally – and defense minister – of the outgoing president. This is what the Indonesian newspaper Rakyat Merdeka writes in an editorial on the day of Prabowo's inauguration.

"Step on the gas immediately, because this government already matured a long time ago."

Jakarta Post sees the same factors, but draws different conclusions.

In an unsigned editorial, the newspaper states that the outgoing Joko Widodo has indeed handed over power, but that Prabowo is taking over a government that is largely loyal to the outgoing president.

"Jokowi's influence will remain. But whether he himself, like the old Indonesian kings, retires to a life of quiet contemplation remains to be seen”.

The president promises freedom - 100,000 police officers were deployed

Indonesia's new president Prabowo Subianto has promised, among other things, that the state will be responsible for free meals and health examinations for people with little money, reports The Straits Times.

- We must realize that a free country is a country where people are free, Prabowo said in his first speech as president today, according to Al Jazeera.

At the same time, the TV channel reports that the ceremony where Prabowo was sworn in was surrounded by a huge security apparatus. Around one hundred thousand members of the security service are said to have been deployed in the capital, Jakarta.

Indonesia gets a new president: "Strict and patriotic"

Prabowo Subianto has been sworn in as Indonesia's eighth president. This is reported by AP.

The former defense minister and general succeeds the wildly popular Joko Widodo, who supported Prabowo's campaign in the February election.

Prabowo has been accused of war crimes during his time as a general, but according to the AP, he was also celebrated by thousands of people on the streets of Jakarta during today's ceremony.

- I see him as a stern and patriotic figure. That's the kind of person we need to lead Indonesia, says 25-year-old Eka Praygoa to the news agency.
