Leading opposition shot dead in Mozambique

Two leading opposition figures have been shot dead in Mozambique's capital Maputo, several media reports.

The two men both worked for the opposition party Podemos. One as a lawyer and adviser to the party's presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, the other as a spokesperson.

According to the police, the two men may have been killed as a result of an "interaction" at a nearby bar shortly before the crime. According to AP, however, large parts of the country believe that the murders were probably politically motivated.

The warning: Threatens the country's shaky democracy

The killing of two prominent opposition figures in Mozambique on Saturday is "repulsive" and threatens to topple the country's already shaky democracy. This is what the Mozambican observer group Mais Integridade writes in a statement.

According to New Telegraph, the opposition has recently called for national protests against the elections held on the ninth of October. In the official vote count, which is still ongoing, the ruling party's Fremilos candidate leads.

Fremilo has ruled the country without interruption since independence 49 years ago.
