The North Korea crisis

North Korea has blown up the road to South Korea

North Korea has made its plans to blow up the border road connecting the country with South Korea a reality. It reports AP and refers to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

"North Korea has blown up parts of the Gyeongui and Donghae roads north of the military demarcation line," South Korea's military said, adding that it had raised the alert in response.

A little later on Tuesday morning, South Korea states that it fired warning shots at North Korea, several news agencies report.

It was last week that North Korea said it wanted to close the border with the South permanently. Pyongyang has accused Seoul of spreading propaganda using leaflets about North Korea.

South Korea condemns – has fired warning shots

South Korea strongly condemns that North Korea blew up parts of the road that connects the countries. This is stated by the country's Ministry of Reunification, writes Reuters.

The ministry calls the action "very abnormal".

It was on Tuesday night that North Korea blew up parts of the road on its side of the border. South Korea responded by firing warning shots south of the military demarcation line that separates the countries.

The Korea Times writes that no soldiers on the South Korean side have been injured.

"The military closely monitors the activities of the North Korean military and maintains a strong readiness posture," South Korea's military writes.

Expert: A way for Kim to further isolate himself

The fact that North Korea blew up parts of South Korea's infrastructure is part of the country's ambition to complete the political change it initiated at the beginning of the year. That's what Mats Engman, head of the Korea Center at the Institute for Security and Development Policy, says in P1 Morgon.

- This means that South Korea is North Korea's main enemy and that they strive for a two-state solution, he says.

Engman points out that North Korea has previously removed symbols of a united Korea. The night blast is another such step.

According to Engman, it is a way for Kim Jong-Un to fuel the image that North Korea is under strong external pressure and that it must therefore invest in the military.
