Refugees in Albanian camp return to Italy

An Italian migration court has decided that the twelve men from Egypt and Bangladesh who are in Italy's refugee camp in Albania must be sent back to Italy immediately. This is reported by several media.

In its decision, the Italian Migration Court refers to the European Court of Justice, which recently ruled that there must not be any form of persecution in a country for it to be considered safe.

Last year, Italy and Albania reached an agreement to transport migrants to a decommissioned Albanian airbase.

Bacterial infection cause when nine monkeys were found dead

The nine monkeys that were recently found dead at a zoo in Hong Kong had been infected with melioidosis, a bacterial infection that led to the development of sepsis, AP writes.

The infection is believed to have entered via an animal keeper who is said to have had contaminated soil on his shoes from digging work done nearby.

Eight of the monkeys were found dead at the zoo on Sunday and another monkey died on Monday after exhibiting "unusual behaviour".

Infections increase the risk of dementia later in life

Major infections in the respiratory tract, influenza and herpes are linked to developing dementia later in life. This is reported by the Washington Post with reference to a new scientific study.

The infections can lead to an accelerated decline of the brain and the study can to some extent show the underlying biological mechanisms that contribute to neurodegenerative diseases, among them Alzheimer's.

Other studies have shown that the flu vaccine can reduce the risk of developing dementia.

- Vaccines will be a great protection both against the acute infection and effects after the infection, says researcher Kristen Funk at the University of North Carolina.
