The Middle East crisis The situation in the West Bank

Olive harvest on the West Bank started: "Most dangerous so far"

Extremist settlers have attacked Palestinian olive growers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank in a series of incidents in recent weeks. The Times of Israel reports.

According to the organization Yesh Din, settlers have forced olive growers to flee, stolen olives and cut down trees.

"This is the most dangerous olive season ever," write a series of UN experts in a statement.

The UN experts call on settlers and Israeli forces not to interfere with the Palestinian olive harvest.

Britain is considering sanctions against Israel

Britain is considering imposing sanctions on ultra-nationalist Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. This is reported by AFP.

- We are looking at it because there are obviously terrible statements combined with deeply concerning activities in the West Bank, says Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Among other things, Smotrich has said that it would be justified to let two million Palestinians starve to death if it meant that the Israeli hostages in Gaza were released.

Both ministers are also outspoken and vocal defenders of so-called settlements in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. The International Court of Justice in The Hague demanded earlier this year that Israel begin the work of dismantling them.

During the past year, the Israeli government has continued to grant permits to settlers. In June, Bezalel Smotrich said it would approve a new settlement in the West Bank for any country that recognized Palestine.

Ben-Gvir: Britain doesn't scare me

Israel's Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir is not intimidated by Britain's threat of sanctions, he says according to Sky News.

- Just as the British tried to make the formation of the Jewish state impossible, they now continue to do so after the formation, in the middle of an existential war, he says.

The days of the British Palestine Mandate are over, the minister adds.

Earlier on Wednesday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer threatened to target Ben-Gvir and fellow minister Bezalel Smotrich with sanctions over their "disgusting" comments about the Gaza war.

Both ministers belong to far-right parties and are proponents of the illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.
