The tanker explosion in Nigeria

At least 140 killed in fuel explosion in Nigeria

More than 140 people were killed after fuel from a tanker caused an explosion in Jigawa state in northern Nigeria last night, writes AFP.

The driver swerved in front of another vehicle and lost control, causing the tanker to overturn. When the explosion occurred, crowds of people had flocked to collect the spilled fuel - something that often happens in the country, due to the economic crisis and high fuel prices.

According to Nura Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency, the death toll is expected to rise further.

Nigeria mourns the victims - minute's silence and mass grave

There is sadness and foreboding in Nigeria after Tuesday's tanker explosion that claimed over 140 lives, news agencies report.

A minute's silence was held in Parliament on Wednesday. Vice President Khasim Shettima is calling for an investigation and pledging government resources to the town of Majiya, where the accident occurred.

According to witnesses, the fire spread so quickly that many did not have time to escape, but were "burned to ashes" where they stood. The victims have been buried in a mass grave, and the country's medical association is urging doctors to seek emergency services.

- It is a heartbreaking moment for all of us, says police chief Ahmadu Abdullahi.
