Anne Applebaum: Trump sounds like Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini

During his presidential election campaign, Donald Trump has used rhetoric derived from Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini. Journalist and author Anne Applebaum writes in The Atlantic.

Among other things, Trump has described his opponents as vermin, talked about a "bloodbath" after the election and about deploying the military against political opponents.

Applebaum writes that this type of rhetoric has never been successful in an American election.

"But it has also never before been tested in an American election."

According to Applebaum, the United States has lived under the belief that the country would be resistant to the kind of language that led to so much suffering in Europe and the world in the 20th century.

"Trump is taking a chance - deliberately and cynically - that we are not at all."

According to Fox News, Applebaum's article has met with harsh criticism and outright derision from parts of the conservative United States.

Elon Musk writes on X that he "can't stop laughing" at the article. Steven Cheung, spokesperson for Trump's presidential election campaign, describes it as "more fake news".

Donald Trump's new mantra: Make America healthy again

The Trump campaign has started using Robert Kennedy Jr.'s slogan "Make America Healthy Again". The bet on health issues is part of securing the support of the former independent presidential candidate, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Trump is known to like soft drinks - admittedly Coke Light - and hamburgers from McDonalds. Kennedy, on the other hand, has long pursued issues around ultra-processed food, environmental toxins and the healthcare system. He believes that healthcare is too focused on curing diseases while not preventing enough.

- It's not just marketing. Trump has bought this. This is exactly the kind of thing he likes, says Joe Grogan, who worked on health issues when Trump was president.
