Political situation in Kenya

Expert: "Fast coffee solution" became his downfall

Kenyan Vice President Rigathi Gachagua made a serious mistake in assuming that he would be free to use his influence under President William Ruto. This is what Kenyan risk analyst Dismas Mokua told AFP after the decision to impeach the vice president on Tuesday.

- He lacked the strategic and political patience that the role requires, and instead fell into the same trap as previous vice presidents who sought "fast coffee solutions" to their problems, he says.

According to The Nation, Cachagua found himself at loggerheads with President William Ruto and his loyal parliamentarians after expressing displeasure with the president's decisions and the way lucrative government tenders were refined.

Kenya's vice president faces impeachment

Kenya's parliament impeaches the country's vice president Rigathi Gachagua. It is clear after a vote today.

The vice president is accused, among other things, of corruption and of fueling ethnic conflicts.

Gachagua was previously a close ally of President William Ruto. The two appear to have fallen out with each other after the protests earlier this year where demonstrators demanded the resignation of the government.

Cachagua has been accused in recent weeks of supporting the protesters. He himself calls the impeachment vote "scandalous" and promises to "fight to the end".
