The Middle East crisis The Gaza war

Task: Israel is considering starving northern Gaza

The Israeli government is considering a total siege of the northernmost third of the Gaza Strip in order to starve out Hamas fighters. This is reported by AP, which has seen a printout of the plan.

After giving residents of the area a week to evacuate, Israel would declare the area a closed zone and cut off the entry of food, water, medicine and fuel. All those remaining would then be classified as enemy combatants.

The UN human rights agency OHCHR said on Monday that Israel appears to have begun cutting off northern Gaza, including by erecting sand barriers at a key crossing and firing at those trying to escape, reports Reuters.

An Israeli source tells AP that the plan is already being launched, but this is denied by the IDF. Prime Minister Netanyahu's spokesperson calls the reports "fake news", according to the Times of Israel.

Large fire broke out after attack: "Bodies everywhere"

A heavy fire broke out in connection with Israel's attack on the al-Aqsa hospital compound in Dayr al-Balah in Gaza late on Sunday. At least four people have died, but the number is feared to rise, writes TT.

Images from the scene show tents burning with open flames and people watching helplessly. Ahmad Radi, who survived the attack, told Al Jazeera that he witnessed one of the worst nights so far.

- The fire trucks couldn't get here. There were so many burnt and charred bodies everywhere.

Israel says al-Aqsa hospital was used by Hamas terrorists and that measures were taken to avoid civilian casualties.

Details of 300 dead in Jabalia - in nine days

Around 300 people have been killed in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza since Israel launched its latest ground operation in the area nine days ago. That's what CNN writes and refers to information from the Gaza media agency.

Earlier in October, Israel's military relaunched an operation in Jabalia after reports that the terrorist group Hamas was regrouping there. According to CNN, this is the third time in a year that Israel has raided the refugee camp.

Gaza's media agency states that fighting in the area is so fierce that medics do not have time to attend to the dead, leaving dead bodies on the streets and in buildings.

Doctor Hussam Abu Safiya in Jabalia says that the refugee camp is "totally besieged" and that neither food nor medical equipment is allowed in.

The death toll has not been confirmed by independent sources and it is unclear how many are civilians.

Living in Jabalia: Bombed all the time - impossible to escape

About 200,000 people are trapped in Jabalia in northern Gaza after Israel's military besieged the area for over a week. Sveriges Radio has spoken to Ibrahim Abbas who lives in Jabalia. He says it is impossible to escape.

- We are prisoners in our own homes, everyone who leaves is exposed to the occupying power that kills people in the street, that shoots and bombs, he tells Ekot.

Another resident of Jabalia, Ahmed Abu Goneim, told AP that the situation is reminiscent of the first days of the war. He will not leave Jabalia.

Hamza Sharif lives with his family in a school that has been turned into a refugee camp. He describes "constant bombing day and night" and says people will run out of goods "very soon".

Israel's military says it surrounded Jabalia after reports that Hamas tried to regroup there.
