The Middle East Crisis Israel-Hezbollah

IDF lost the drone - crashed during dinner

Sunday's drone attack on a military base in central Israel was not preceded by an air raid warning. The reason is that Israel's military, the IDF, lost the drone that later crashed into the cafeteria of the military base. This is according to a preliminary investigation by the IDF, writes Haaretz.

Four Israeli soldiers were killed in the attack and around 60 people were injured, seven of them seriously. The attack happened at the same time as the soldiers were finishing dinner.

- It could have ended much worse if the drone had hit a bit earlier, says a soldier, referring to the fact that several had already left the dining room.

It was on Sunday evening that three drones were fired at Binyamina. Two of the drones were shot down, but one hit the military base.

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the attack.

At the same time, 51 people were killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon on Sunday, the BBC writes.

EU: Attacks on the UN must stop immediately

Israel's attacks on UN forces in Lebanon are "totally unacceptable". This is what EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell says to AFP.

All of the EU's 27 member states have agreed on a statement in which they condemn the attacks.

"Attacks against UN peacekeepers are a serious violation of international law. [...] These attacks must stop immediately," it said.

The UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, has accused Israel of deliberately shelling their posts in recent days. Several people are said to have been injured.

Analysis: Big failure - Israel is shaken

Yesterday's attack in which four Israeli soldiers were killed by Hezbollah drones is "a very serious incident". That's what SVT's correspondent in Israel, Carl Fridh Kleberg, says. According to him, the attack is described as unprecedented.

- It warrants an upcoming sharp reaction from the Israeli side, he says to SVT.

Sky News' Dominic Waghorn writes in an analysis that the attack is "very worrying" for Israel. The drone hit a cafeteria at a military base in Binyamina, which is a good distance from the border with Lebanon. No flight alert was issued.

“This is a major security failure and a sign that the enemy is stepping up. [...] Israel is shaken by a surprise counter-offensive that strikes at the core of its military.”

60 people were injured in the attack, seven of them seriously, writes Haaretz.
