Kremlin takes Trump's "angry" statement in stride

On Monday, the Kremlin commented on Donald Trump's statement that he is "angry" with Putin after the Russian president called for a transitional government in Ukraine.

- We and the American side continue to work on our bilateral relations, which were enormously damaged by the previous administration, says Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov according to CNN.

He adds that they are working on "some ideas regarding the Ukrainian agreement", but does not provide any more details.

No new talks between Putin and Trump are planned, but can be quickly arranged if necessary, Peskov continues.

Political situation in Zimbabwe
Protests in Zimbabwe - despite the sharp warning

A small number of protesters gathered in the Zimbabwean capital Harare on Monday to demand the resignation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, reports AFP.

Security was tight and the streets were nearly deserted after the government issued a stark warning to residents to stay home. The protesters who gathered were quickly dispersed by police with tear gas.

They chanted, among other things, “we don’t want 2030,” referring to a political campaign within the ruling Zanu-PF party to keep Mnangagwa in power after his term ends in 2028.

Mnangagwa, 82, took power in a coup in 2017, when he ousted Robert Mugabe, who had been in power since independence in 1980.

Frightened residents stayed indoors and closed shops

Very few people dared to heed the call for protests against Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday, and the streets of the capital Harare were almost deserted, writes AP.

The call came from a rival faction within the ruling Zanu-PF party, led by party veteran Blessed Geza, in response to a campaign to keep Mnangagwa in office after his term ends in 2028.

The government warned residents to ignore the call, and a large police operation was ordered.

Rumors of the risk of violence spread to the point that shops, public transport and schools were closed, among other things. The government called it a “flop revolution”, while Geza promised new initiatives.

“There will probably be no big revolt [...] but it is clear that tensions within Zanu-PF are high and that it is no longer possible to pretend that everything is fine,” says political analyst Pedzisai Ruhanya.

Marine Le Pen is convicted of fraud and barred from the 2027 presidential election.

Now Russia, Elon Musk and Viktor Orbán are coming to her defense.

The fraud verdict against Marine Le Pen hit like a political bomb in France.

The French far-right politician will now serve four years in prison – and is also banned from running in the 2027 presidential election, where she has been tipped as the favorite in opinion polls.

– They are deliberately trying to prevent me from running in 2027, she says.

Now she is being defended from several sides:

"When the radical left cannot win through a democratic vote, they abuse the legal system to imprison their opponents," says Elon Musk.

The US State Department says it sees similarities between Le Pen and Donald Trump:

- The exclusion of people from the political process is particularly worrying given the aggressive and corrupt legal warfare that was directed against President Trump here in the United States, says spokeswoman Tammy Bruce.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also defends the French opposition leader:

“Never interfered”

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini calls the verdict a “declaration of war from Brussels.”

“Those who fear the verdict from the voters often find their solace in verdicts from the judiciary.”

Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov also claims that “more and more European capitals are violating democratic norms.”

“We do not interfere in France’s internal affairs and have never done so. But our observation of European capitals shows that they do not hesitate to go beyond the limits of democracy in the political process.”

Convicted of embezzlement

Marine Le Pen, who leads the right-wing nationalist party National Rally, was convicted of being the mastermind behind a massive embezzlement of EU funds.

The money, which was supposed to be used for the party’s work in the European Parliament, was instead used to build up her party organization at home.

The court estimated that a total of 2.9 million euros had been embezzled between 2004 and 2016. Twelve accomplices were also found guilty by the court.

Hundreds of thousands dead, millions evacuated and economic damage of 20 billion Swedish kronor.

The feared Japanese trench could have devastating consequences for the entire country, according to a new report from the Japanese government.

Several experts warn of a significant risk of major earthquakes in the near future.

Two tectonic plates in the 900-kilometer-long Nankai Trough are causing fear in Japan. And the government's new calculation is not light reading.

The worst-case scenario for the area would be an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale – which would mean a catastrophe for large parts of Japan.

The greatest damage

According to the government’s new report, such a quake could cause widespread building collapses, tsunamis and fires. The death toll is expected to reach 298,000 and the economic damage would be equivalent to half the country’s GDP.

The greatest devastation is expected to be caused by subsequent tsunami waves, which could force more than twelve million people to evacuate.

The Japanese would be hit hardest if it happened in winter, when many people crowd public transport and light fires at home.

The report compares it to the enormous earthquake and tsunami that hit the country in 2011, killing around 20,000 people.

80 percent probability

The fear of major earthquakes has always haunted the country, which is among the areas on earth with the greatest seismic activity. A government-appointed panel of experts has estimated the risk of a so-called Nankai earthquake measuring between eight and nine magnitudes at “about 80 percent” within the next 30 years, the Financial Times reports.
A new warning system was installed in 2017 to improve Japan’s preparedness for major earthquakes. The alert was first raised in August last year – but ended with a magnitude 7.1 earthquake without any damage.

Japan to invest another 54 billion in chip investment

The Japanese government will invest an additional 54 billion kronor in the semiconductor company Rapidus, which it wants to manufacture the next generation of chips in the country from 2027. This is reported by AFP.

Securing leading technology in chips has become a national concern, as it wants to regain the role as a leader in the industry that the country had in the 80s, the news agency writes.

The hope is that Rapidus will be able to mass produce chips with transistors of two nanometers, which other giants such as TSMC and Intel are already competing to be able to do.

- Japan is more than a decade behind the others, it will require enormous resources to catch up, said Rapidus chairman Tetsuro Higashi in an AFP interview last year.

Crypto investors pay for Space X route over the poles

The first manned space flight over both poles of the Earth is expected tonight, writes Bloomberg. The expedition is being led by Space X, which will launch a Falcon 9 rocket funded by crypto investor Chun Wang.

For three to five days, four astronauts will fly over the North and South Poles to research how space travel affects human health.

– I look forward to becoming the first person in history to point a camera at both the North and South Poles from space, says one of the astronauts, Norwegian filmmaker Jannicke Mikkelsen.

Trump's USA Tariffs
Trump's message: "The new tariffs apply to all countries"

Donald Trump announces that the tariffs he plans to introduce this week will include all countries – not just those with large trade imbalances.

– We'll start with all countries, and we'll see what happens, the American president told reporters aboard Air Force One.

The new tariff plan, which is expected to be presented on Wednesday, follows previous tariffs on, among other things, steel, aluminum, cars and all goods from China.

Trump is also threatening so-called secondary tariffs against buyers of Russian oil, after Vladimir Putin suggested that Ukraine should be governed by a “transitional administration” until the next elections.

Magdalena Andersson: Bad for all of Europe

The mass layoffs at Northvolt are a serious situation for Sweden and all of Europe, says the Social Democrats’ party leader Magdalena Andersson to DI during a press conference.

She also says that it is important that Sweden manages to capture the expertise in the battery area that has been gathered in Skellefteå, among others.

– If it were to spread like wildfire, it would be bad for all of Europe.

Food prices
Food prices continue to rise: The worst is behind us

Food prices continue to rise, according to new forecasts from Nordea and Swedbank. However, economists believe that the biggest rise is over.

– They will probably rise a little more, but the big rise is behind us, says Swedbank's head of forecasting Andreas Wallström to TT.

Nordea expects a monthly rise of 0.7 percent in March and an increase of 5.3 percent on an annual basis. It is a significant increase, emphasizes the bank's chief analyst Torbjörn Isaksson.

– However, far from the almost 20 percent that we saw the other day.

The price increases are now mainly concentrated in individual goods such as coffee, unlike the broad rise in 2022. The strengthened krona and low energy prices are believed to contribute to a more stable price development going forward.

Missing soldiers in Lithuania
Three of the US soldiers have been found dead in Lithuania

Three of the four missing US soldiers in Lithuania have been found dead, the US army announced according to AFP.

“The search for the fourth soldier is still ongoing,” it said in a statement.

The bodies of the soldiers were found when their vehicle was recovered from a swamp this afternoon, after a six-day search.

They were taking part in an exercise outside the small town of Pabrade, near the border with Belarus, when they were reported missing on Tuesday morning.

The water, mud and marshland have complicated the effort to recover the 70-ton armored vehicle.

Trump: The Houthis have the worst pain ahead

Donald Trump issues a stark warning to the Houthi movement in Yemen in a new post on Truth Social.

He writes that the leadership of the Iran-backed militia has been “decimated by incessant attacks” over the past two weeks.

“Stop shelling American ships, and we will stop shelling you. Otherwise, we have only just begun, and the real pain is still waiting for the Houthis and their sponsors in Iran,” he writes.

Late Monday night, the Houthis announced that the United States had carried out airstrikes on the capital Sanaa, and that at least one person had been killed.

Earthquake alert in Japan
Japan: Expected mega-earthquake could claim 300,000 lives

The expected “mega-earthquake” that has an 80 percent chance of occurring off Japan’s Pacific coast sooner or later could claim up to 300,000 lives. This is the assessment of the Japanese government in a recent report according to Reuters.

The earthquake is expected to occur in the deep-sea Nankai Trench, which runs along 900 kilometers of the seabed just south of Japan’s largest island, Honshu. There, the Eurasian continental plate is being pushed against the Philippine plate, and the resulting tension is expected to result in an earthquake of magnitude 8 to 9.

In the worst-case scenario, the quake could cause catastrophic tsunami waves, hundreds of building collapses and costs equivalent to almost 20,000 billion kronor, according to the calculation.

RSF says no to talks: “Speaking the language of weapons”

The paramilitary group RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan Daglo has admitted for the first time that it has withdrawn from the Sudanese capital Khartoum, reports AFP.

The statement was reportedly made in a post on social media, a couple of days after government forces declared the capital “liberated”. The city had then been in RSF hands since the outbreak of the war almost two years ago.

Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, however, denies all reports that it is negotiating a ceasefire with the government.

– We have neither an agreement nor any discussions with them – the only language we speak is that of weapons.

Representatives of the government forces have previously said that they “will neither forgive, compromise, nor negotiate” with RSF.

“Zelenskyj is trying to back out of the mineral agreement – then he will have big, big problems”

It seems that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is trying to pull out of the mineral agreement with the United States, Donald Trump told reporters aboard the presidential plane Air Force One tonight.

– If he does, he will have big problems – big, big problems, Trump said according to Fox News.

Trump says he does not accept that Zelenskyj now wants to renegotiate the agreement. This weekend, Zelenskyj said that Ukraine cannot agree to the latest American draft.

Yesterday, Trump said that he is “very angry” with Vladimir Putin for delaying the peace negotiations, but on board the plane he said that Putin is unlikely to back out of his promise of a partial ceasefire.

– I have known him for a long time. We have always gotten along well.

Sources: Ukraine prepares presidential election

Ukraine is preparing to hold a presidential election this summer, sources tell The Economist.

According to the sources, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj called a meeting last week to begin to work out what measures need to be taken.

In that case, the election will be held after a potential ceasefire that the US hopes will occur in April. According to the sources, the incumbent president could run for re-election.

Presidential elections have not been held as usual in Ukraine during the war due to the military state of emergency.

Of the aid package, which is the nineteenth in a row, 9 billion will be spent on the purchase of defense equipment that will later be delivered to Ukraine. The second largest item of 5 billion will go to the Ukrainian defense industry and funds, which procure equipment for Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has signed an order to call up 160,000 Russians for military service this spring, reports the Moscow Times.

This is the largest number since the spring of 2011, when 203,000 were called up. During the war years, between 120,000 and 150,000 have been called up every six months.

According to current Russian legislation, citizens aged 18 to 30 are subject to military service.

Israeli military orders evacuation of Rafah

The Israeli military has issued a comprehensive evacuation order for most of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, the AP reports. Palestinians in several areas of southern Gaza are being ordered to leave their homes and head to the so-called safe zone of al-Mawasi.

“The IDF is resuming fighting with great force to destroy the capabilities of terrorist organizations in the area,” spokesman Avichay Adraee wrote on X.

Over a thousand dead in Gaza since ceasefire was broken

1,001 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel resumed attacks, the Hamas-run health authority said, according to AFP.

According to a statement, 80 people have been killed in the past two days.

The ceasefire was broken earlier in March after Hamas rejected Israel’s proposal to extend the first phase and release more hostages.

The death toll from Gaza is difficult to verify because Israel does not allow independent media into Gaza, but the UN and other bodies have considered the Gaza health authority's statistics reliable.

UN: Israel executed 15 health workers "one by one" - dumped in mass grave

15 Palestinian health and rescue workers were executed "one by one" by Israeli forces, and then buried in a mass grave, in Gaza on March 23, the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said, according to The Guardian.

The workers, who were affiliated with the Red Crescent and the civil defense, had, according to the UN, rushed to rescue colleagues who had been shot earlier in the day when their clearly marked vehicles were attacked by Israeli forces in Rafah.

According to OCHA's Palestine director Jonathan Whittall, the bodies were dug up wearing their work uniforms and gloves.

- The ambulances have been buried in the sand. A UN vehicle has been buried in the sand. An Israeli military bulldozer has buried them, he says.

Netanyahu associates arrested – allegedly related to “Qatargate”

Israeli police have arrested two high-ranking associates of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reports the Times of Israel.

They are both suspected of involvement in the so-called “Qatargate” scandal, which concerns illegal contacts between Netanyahu’s government and the state of Qatar.

Previously, a close associate of Netanyahu has been indicted on suspicion of having tried to plant pro-Qatar news articles in the Israeli press, on behalf of the Gulf state.

Netanyahu appoints new security chief – despite protests

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appoints Eli Sharvit as new security chief, according to Israeli media. He was previously commander of the Israeli navy.

The country’s Supreme Court has stopped the impeachment of the former chief, Ronen Bar, and the new election is described as controversial.

Netanyahu and Bar reportedly disagree over who bears responsibility for Hamas’s success in carrying out the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023. Netanyahu says he does not trust Bar, and Bar claims that Netanyahu’s demands for “personal loyalty” are inappropriate.

Last week, parliament voted in favor of a criticized new law that gives the government greater power over the judiciary.

Voices on the Le Pen verdict

Bardella: “French democracy has been executed”

Jordan Bardella, party leader of the French far-right National Rally party, reacts to the verdict against the party’s frontman Marine Le Pen in a post on social media.

“Today, it is not only Marine Le Pen who is being unjustly sentenced: it is French democracy that has been executed,” he writes on X.

Marine Le Pen has been sentenced to four years in prison for fraud and is thus barred from running for public office for five years. The verdict takes effect immediately, meaning she will not be able to run in the 2027 presidential election.

Analysis: “A catastrophic end to Le Pen’s career”

The verdict is the worst Marine Le Pen could have hoped for, writes the BBC’s France correspondent, Hugh Schofield, in an analysis. He describes it as an earthquake with huge consequences for her, her party and French democracy.

“Le Pen is out of the race and she is a very angry woman – we saw her leave the courtroom earlier with a granite face,” he writes.

The Guardian’s Angelique Chrisafis writes in an analysis that the verdict is a blow to the National Rally, even though the core of Le Pen’s electorate likely supports her.

“Le Pen’s sentence – which she had previously likened to a ‘political death sentence’ – is all the more personally damaging because she began her political career by portraying herself as a crusader against corruption,” she writes.

Sky News correspondent Adam Parsons calls the verdict a disastrous end to Le Pen’s career.

“For her, this is a disastrous end to a political career that has seen many ups and downs but which seemed as if it might be heading for its peak.”

Musk: Radical left abuses the legal system

Elon Musk has spoken out in several posts on X about the verdict against French far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

“When the radical left cannot win democratic elections, they abuse the legal system to imprison their enemies. They do the same thing all over the world,” he writes.

Musk claims that it is the same thing that Donald Trump has been subjected to in the US, and says that the verdict “will backfire” on the French justice system.

Billionaire and Trump associate Musk has previously expressed support for European far-right parties such as AFD in Germany and Reform UK in the UK.

The future of Greenland

Greenlandic minister: Danish visit inappropriate

Greenland's incoming Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt calls it "inappropriate" that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will visit the island on Wednesday. This is reported by Ekstra Bladet.

- A head of government is coming to visit to meet her counterpart, and officially there is no new government in place yet, she says.

A new, broad, government coalition was presented on Friday, but it has not yet been formally approved by the members of the Greenlandic parliament Inatsisartut.

New leader marks: "Looking forward to the visit"

Greenland's incoming Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen is at odds with his Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt after she called Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's upcoming visit "inappropriate".

In a Facebook post, he writes that he is looking forward to Frederiksen's visit "enormously" and continues:

"At the same time, I want to emphasize that the statements made about the upcoming visit are not the position of my future government."

Motzfeldt said earlier today that she does not think it is appropriate for Frederiksen to come until the new government coalition, which was presented on Friday, has been formally approved by the Greenlandic parliament.

Frederiksen plans to travel to Greenland on Wednesday.

Analysis: Embarrassing start for Greenland's new government

Just three days after it was formed, and before it had even taken office, a rift emerged in the new Greenlandic government when Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt called Mette Frederiksen's upcoming visit "inappropriate" - and was quickly reprimanded by her prime minister.

– It is embarrassing for the Foreign Minister to make a statement without having checked with his Prime Minister and seemingly without consensus in the government, says Ekstra Bladet's political commentator Hans Engell.

It does not bode well for the government that they cannot even agree to welcome the Danish Prime Minister for a visit, in the midst of the greatest crisis in modern times, he continues.

TV2's correspondent Martin Selsøe Sørensen agrees.

"It was expected that the four parties in the coalition would sooner or later have difficulty keeping up, but it is highly unexpected and incomprehensible that it is already happening now."

The fact that Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen dismissed Motzfeldt's remarks with lightning speed, however, seems to mean that it will be she herself who will take the hit, rather than the relationship between Denmark and Greenland, he continues.

The verdict against Le Pen

Le Pen Sentenced to Prison – Banned from 2027 Elections

The French far-right National Rally party leader Marine Le Pen has been convicted of fraud, AFP reports. She has been sentenced to four years in prison and banned from running for public office for five years.

The verdict comes into effect immediately, according to AFP, and means she will not be able to run in the 2027 presidential election.

The National Rally leader has been accused of using money that was supposed to go to assistants in the European Parliament to pay political officials in national French politics. Eight of the party's MEPs are also included in the sentence.

“The crime was precisely an attack on the rules of the democratic game to the detriment of the voters,” the court declared.

Le Pen’s lawyer: We will appeal the verdict

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen will appeal the verdict, her lawyer Rodolphe Bosselut announced, according to Le Monde.

“This is a blow to democracy,” he said during a brief press conference.

Le Pen is expected to make her own statement on French television at 8 p.m. tonight.

The 56-year-old leader of the National Rally was sentenced today to four years in prison, two of which are suspended, and a hefty fine for fraud with EU funds.

Report: Prime Minister “disturbed” by the verdict

Privately, French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou is “disturbed” by the verdict against Marine Le Pen. A source close to Bayrou told the AFP news agency.

The source added that the prime minister, however, has no intention of publicly commenting on the far-right leader's prison sentence and fine.

Le Pen herself is expected to comment on the verdict on French television on Monday night. Her lawyer has said she will appeal.

Bayrou belongs to the center-right Modem party, which is part of President Macron's governing Ensemble coalition.

Le Pen: I am innocent – the verdict is political

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has made an initial statement about the verdict against her. She calls it unlawful and says she is innocent.

– The court made a political decision. They are deliberately trying to prevent me from running in 2027, she says on French television.

Le Pen was sentenced earlier today to four years in prison, two of which are suspended, and a hefty fine for fraud with EU funds. The verdict means that she is not allowed to run in the 2027 presidential election.

Legal experts expect that Le Pen will challenge the ban on running – technically it is possible that the verdicts will have time to be overturned before the presidential election, writes TT.

Le Pen's lawyer has announced that she will appeal the verdict.

Marine Le Pen sentenced to four years in prison.

The court in Paris announced this on Monday.

She is also barred from running in the French presidential election in 2027.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing nationalist party National Rally in France, was sentenced on Monday in a French court to four years in prison for fraud and for embezzling public funds.

The court in Paris also announced that Le Pen is barred from running for public office for five years, according to Bloomberg.

Le Pen has been charged with masterminding a massive embezzlement of EU funds.

The court believes the total damage amounted to 2.9 million euros by allowing the European Parliament to “take responsibility for people who in reality worked for the far-right party,” writes Le Monde.

Le Pen is convicted along with eight other party colleagues.

A further 12 assistants are also convicted, for receiving stolen goods.

Trump's USA  First term
Trump hints that he wants to stay in office longer than is allowed: "There are ways"

Donald Trump does not rule out that he intends to try to stay in office as president even after the next election. This despite the fact that the Constitution stipulates that a president can only serve two terms.

In an interview with NBC, Trump says that he is not joking.

- There are ways to do it.

NBC mentions a scenario in which Vice President JD Vance runs for president, and then hands over the role to Trump.

- That is one method. But there are others, says Trump.

Abolishing the current limit would require two-thirds of Congress to vote to launch such a proposal, or for two-thirds of the states to demand it. That it would happen is seen as unlikely.

US expert doubts: "He will make a Putin?"

It is “highly unlikely” that Donald Trump could stay in office longer than the two terms the constitution allows. Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University, tells Aftonbladet.

Blanck says that a constitutional change is extremely difficult to push through, and he questions why Vice President JD Vance would run as a candidate and then hand over to Trump.

– In other words, he’s going to make a Putin? That’s what Putin did.

In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Trump said that he doesn’t rule out a third term as president, and that “there are ways” to make it possible.

Information: US felt “blackmailed” when Ukraine launched the Kursk offensive

The US was unaware of Ukraine’s offensive into the Russian region of Kursk last summer. This is according to sources for the New York Times, which in a long report describes Ukrainian-American cooperation during Russia’s invasion.

Ukraine crossed the border with equipment donated by the West without informing the US. Washington saw this as a breach of trust, partly because it was kept secret and partly because it effectively forced the US to act in a way that had not been agreed upon.

The parties had agreed that donated weapons could be used against clearly defined zones on Russian soil. In the specific area, it was about stopping Russia from being able to carry out attacks on Kharkiv. The US could have withdrawn that option when Ukraine entered Kursk, but knew at the time that Ukrainian soldiers would lack protection from Russian missiles.

– It was blackmail, says an American source.

Denmark hits back at the USA: "Completely unacceptable"

"Completely unacceptable from a close ally". This is how Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen comments on Donald Trump's latest statement that military force cannot be ruled out for American control over Greenland.

In SVT's Agenda, Rasmussen says that it would be contrary to international law and the NATO treaty. He also says that Denmark has always stood by the USA, for example when Article 5 was activated after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Rasmussen says that a stronger territorial defense is needed, also in Greenland, and that Denmark is in the process of building it.

- But the USA should help us with that and not mock us for it.

Crypto scandal causes voters to change their minds about Milei

Argentine President Javier Milei is taking a heavy hit in several opinion polls after becoming the main character in a major crypto scandal earlier this spring, El País reports.

Consistent surveys show that residents have an increasingly negative image of Milei and of developments in the country.

“The government’s negative image continues to grow month by month,” say Gustavo Córdoba and Paola Zuban, who conducted one of the surveys.

Milei promoted and praised the cryptocurrency “Libra” in a post on social media. The currency initially soared, but then quickly dropped to zero, and many lost large sums of money. Milei has been reported for fraud.

Opposition wants to boycott Erdogan-linked companies

Opposition forces in Turkey are calling for an economic boycott of companies considered close to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, writes The Guardian.

During a protest against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Özgür Özel, leader of the CHP party, is calling for a boycott of a business conglomerate that owns everything from energy companies to restaurants.

This has prompted Pilates teacher Serkan to boycott the Espressolab coffee chain.

– I love it, but they're on the boycott list now, so I'm not going there.

Economists on the economy: Doubts about consumption

Among the unemployed, educated people are now the most numerous, according to statistics from KI. Danske Bank's chief economist Susanne Spector sees this as a sign of the times, but predicts that a large part of the group will have an easier time finding a job when demand on the labor market increases. At the same time, it is worrying that the recovery is not really getting started, she tells DI.

- This economic upswing that we and many others expect will be consumption-driven, we see new doubts there, she says.

Professor warns: Food prices may continue to skyrocket

The high food prices may continue to rise. Magnus Henrekson, a professor of economics, warns of this, according to SR.

Last week, the government presented an updated food strategy that, among other things, aims to increase domestic production. But the degree of self-sufficiency in Swedish agriculture is low, which risks fueling the rise in food prices, he says.

– We only produce just over half of the food we need in Sweden. If we are to increase again, food prices will rise, says Magnus Henrekson.

Volvo Cars' future

Analyst: Buying time with a very safe card

Disagreements over strategy, rather than the stock market crash, are said to be the explanation for Jim Rowan leaving Volvo Cars after three years. Handelsbanken analyst Hampus Engellau speculates in a comment to Dagens Nyheter on Sunday.

– When a CEO is forced to leave at such short notice, it is often because the board and the CEO have different views on how the business should be driven forward, he tells the newspaper.

The veteran Håkan Samuelsson will replace him. In doing so, Volvo Cars is buying time, Engellau continues to EFN.

– It’s a very safe bet.

Several sources state that there is pressure to pay a nominal amount on X, after Musk got his high-profile role in the Trump administration. The fact that he has also taken legal action against companies that have stopped advertising, such as Shell, Nestlé and Lego, is another factor that weighs in.

– It’s about paying just enough to stay off the blacklist, says Lou Paskalis, CEO of marketing consultancy AJL Advisory.

Donald Trump is opening up for a third term in office.

And there are "several methods" to extend his time in power, he says.

- In other words, he's going to make a Putin? says US expert Dag Blanck.

In an interview with NBC News, Trump was asked if he would consider serving another term and replied:

- Many people want me to do it, he said, clarifying that "he's not kidding."

When asked if there are plans to seek a third term, Trump replied that "there are methods to do it."

NBC then painted a possible scenario in which Vice President JD Vance would run and hand over power to Trump.

- That's a method. But there are others too, Trump replied.

”Man vill testa konstitutionen”, säger Frida Stranne.

Frida Stranne, PhD in Peace and Development Research with a focus on American foreign and security policy, is not surprised.

– It has been something that has been discussed in the circles around him for a few months now. We have heard some people talk about reviewing the possibilities. Then it is about the fact that there is a rule that a president cannot serve more than two terms. But then they want to test whether that only applies where there is a coherent period or whether it can be different if there has been a break in between. As has happened now. And then they want to test the constitution in that way by testing the possibilities if it would work. So that is certainly what he is referring to, I would think. And that is not surprising.

Can it be done like that?

– Well, it is very difficult with the American constitution. All presidents try different ways to strengthen their power. But that is a struggle between the president and the judiciary. It is impossible to say whether it is possible or not to do that. These are new things that must be tried.

What kind of reactions do you think it will arouse?

– Yes, it raises hopes among those who support him about the possibility of extending his presidency. And it will arouse a lot of reactions about abuse of power and that type of discussion among opponents and among many who perceive authoritarian tendencies in his presidency. It will be just as divided as on all other issues, she says.

Dag Blanck ställer sig frågande till varför JD Vance skulle gå med på att lämna över makten om han väljs till president.

Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University, does not believe that Trump's hopes will be fulfilled.

And he questions using JD Vance to hand over power.

– In other words, he will make a Putin? That's what Putin did. No, I think it is extremely unlikely that the Supreme Court would approve it. And why would Vance agree to it?

Getting a constitutional amendment would also be difficult, Blanck believes.

– The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution says that you can only elect your president twice. He has done that now. The only thing you can do is amend the Constitution. And it is a very complicated process. It requires two-thirds of Congress to approve such a bill.

It is extremely unlikely that it will happen. There is a small Republican majority, but not two-thirds. And it also requires three-quarters of the states to approve it. And that's not going to happen.

Does that sound like you're shooting this down?

- I think that's very unlikely. I think the best way would be to amend the Constitution. But this thing about letting a friend choose... That has happened in and of itself, among governors, where spouses have been chosen. But I don't think there's been a case of someone resigning in favor of someone else.
