The Sudanese military has regained the capital
The Sudanese military has regained control of the capital, Khartoum, several media outlets report.
The city has been besieged by the paramilitary force RSF, which launched an attack in April 2023. This led to a civil war that has been ongoing since then, with an estimated 150,000 people killed and millions displaced from their homes.
The military announces that it has “full control of the city” but at the same time says that this is not the end of the war.
“We will continue to fight until we have liberated the entire country and ended the militia presence,” says spokesman Khaled al-Aiser.
RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo now no longer has control of any major city in the geographically strategic areas around the Nile or on the Red Sea coastline. However, the militia has a large grip on Darfur in the western parts of the country.
Joy in Sudan: "We can finally go home"
Sudanese who were displaced from their homes danced through the streets of the city of Port Sudan when news broke yesterday of the military's successes in the capital Khartoum, AFP reports.
Now they hope they can soon return home.
- The joy has spread everywhere. God willing, we will be able to go home and finally celebrate Eid in our houses, Khartoum resident Motaz Essam told the news agency.
During the night, the military had taken back the city that was captured by the RSF militia in April 2023. Then the civil war broke out, which led to the death of more than 150,000 people and the displacement of millions from their homes.
Since then, Port Sudan has been the country's de facto capital, AFP reports. Hundreds of thousands of people fled there. Yesterday, people stood in the streets and cried over the defeat of the rebels in Khartoum.
“The second they say Khartoum is ready, we will return to our homes, our loved ones and our neighbors,” says Sudanese Ahmed Ibrahim.
