Political situation in Turkey

Students demonstrate in Istanbul – met with violence

Large demonstrations continue in Turkey today, several Turkish media report. This after Istanbul Mayor and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's political opponent, Ekrem Imamoglu, was imprisoned last week.

The arrest has been called politically motivated and protests have shaken the entire country. After that, authorities in Istanbul banned demonstrations in the city, and now 1,879 people have been arrested, reports opposition television company Halk TV.

TT reports, citing local media, that students gathered near a university to read out a statement. There they were met by security forces who used pepper spray, water cannons and plastic bullets. 150 police officers have been injured in connection with the demonstrations.

BBC journalist arrested and expelled from Turkey

BBC's Turkey correspondent Mark Lowen has been deported from Turkey after being arrested in Istanbul on Wednesday. The British public service channel writes.

Lowen had been in Turkey for several days to cover the protests against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after the arrest of opposition politician Ekrem Imamoglu.

Lowen was arrested at his hotel and held by police for 17 hours before being expelled with the explanation that he was a “threat to public order”.

– This is an extremely worrying incident, and we will present our case to the Turkish authorities, says BBC director general Deborah Turness.

Almost 1900 people and several journalists have been arrested since the protests broke out last week. Among them, an AFP photographer has been arrested.
