Political situation in Israel

Netanyahu associates arrested – allegedly related to “Qatargate”

Israeli police have arrested two high-ranking associates of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reports the Times of Israel.

They are both suspected of involvement in the so-called “Qatargate” scandal, which concerns illegal contacts between Netanyahu’s government and the state of Qatar.

Previously, a close associate of Netanyahu has been indicted on suspicion of having tried to plant pro-Qatar news articles in the Israeli press, on behalf of the Gulf state.

Netanyahu appoints new security chief – despite protests

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appoints Eli Sharvit as new security chief, according to Israeli media. He was previously commander of the Israeli navy.

The country’s Supreme Court has stopped the impeachment of the former chief, Ronen Bar, and the new election is described as controversial.

Netanyahu and Bar reportedly disagree over who bears responsibility for Hamas’s success in carrying out the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023. Netanyahu says he does not trust Bar, and Bar claims that Netanyahu’s demands for “personal loyalty” are inappropriate.

Last week, parliament voted in favor of a criticized new law that gives the government greater power over the judiciary.
