Voices on the Le Pen verdict

Bardella: “French democracy has been executed”

Jordan Bardella, party leader of the French far-right National Rally party, reacts to the verdict against the party’s frontman Marine Le Pen in a post on social media.

“Today, it is not only Marine Le Pen who is being unjustly sentenced: it is French democracy that has been executed,” he writes on X.

Marine Le Pen has been sentenced to four years in prison for fraud and is thus barred from running for public office for five years. The verdict takes effect immediately, meaning she will not be able to run in the 2027 presidential election.

Analysis: “A catastrophic end to Le Pen’s career”

The verdict is the worst Marine Le Pen could have hoped for, writes the BBC’s France correspondent, Hugh Schofield, in an analysis. He describes it as an earthquake with huge consequences for her, her party and French democracy.

“Le Pen is out of the race and she is a very angry woman – we saw her leave the courtroom earlier with a granite face,” he writes.

The Guardian’s Angelique Chrisafis writes in an analysis that the verdict is a blow to the National Rally, even though the core of Le Pen’s electorate likely supports her.

“Le Pen’s sentence – which she had previously likened to a ‘political death sentence’ – is all the more personally damaging because she began her political career by portraying herself as a crusader against corruption,” she writes.

Sky News correspondent Adam Parsons calls the verdict a disastrous end to Le Pen’s career.

“For her, this is a disastrous end to a political career that has seen many ups and downs but which seemed as if it might be heading for its peak.”

Musk: Radical left abuses the legal system

Elon Musk has spoken out in several posts on X about the verdict against French far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

“When the radical left cannot win democratic elections, they abuse the legal system to imprison their enemies. They do the same thing all over the world,” he writes.

Musk claims that it is the same thing that Donald Trump has been subjected to in the US, and says that the verdict “will backfire” on the French justice system.

Billionaire and Trump associate Musk has previously expressed support for European far-right parties such as AFD in Germany and Reform UK in the UK.
