In Denmark, concerns are growing that Donald Trump will take Greenland.
Now the American president is threatening again to take military action.
– We will get Greenland, 100 percent, he says in a new interview.
After Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland on Friday, the tone between the US and Denmark has escalated further. During his stay on the Danish island, Vance spoke about the Danes' failure to keep the island and its inhabitants safe.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen responded by criticizing Vance and Trump's tone when it comes to statements about Greenland.
- Of course we are open to criticism. But let me be completely honest: We do not appreciate the tone in which it is being conveyed, he says.
Due to the situation, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will visit Greenland early next week to talk about cooperation and cohesion. She will, among other things, meet with the new Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
"Not ruling anything out"
On Sunday night, Donald Trump made a new, notable statement about Greenland. In an interview with NBC News, the president says that the United States has "absolutely" had talks about annexing Greenland.
– We will get Greenland, 100 percent, he says.
Trump, who started talking about Greenland during his first term, says that there is a good chance that the US will take over the island without having to use the military. But taking military action is not impossible, according to the president.
– I am not ruling anything out, he says.
Could have consequences for Denmark
In the interview, Trump was asked what reactions an American annexation of Greenland would lead to in Russia and the rest of the world.
– I don't think about it. I actually don't care. Greenland is a completely separate topic, very different. It's about international peace and it's about international security and strength, says the president.
The American threats will also have real consequences for Denmark, believes Fredrik Jensen, former chief of operations for the Danish intelligence service. In an interview with Ekstrabladet, he warns that Trump and his administration will pressure the country.
– I would be very surprised if the CIA and NSA (the US security agency, ed. note) were not tasked with finding something that could be used against Denmark and Greenland.
