Five people stabbed in Amsterdam – one arrested

Five people have been stabbed near Dam Square in Amsterdam, reports De Telegraaf. A suspect has been arrested.

Part of the square has been cordoned off and a helicopter has landed, reports public service broadcaster NOS. It is unclear whether it is one or more crime scenes.

“The motive for the knife attack is currently unclear, but it is part of an ongoing investigation,” writes the Amsterdam police on X.

Four people are said to be seriously injured.

Victims were chosen at random: “It could have been me”

The victims of Thursday’s knife attack in Amsterdam appear to have been attacked at random, reports De Telegraaf.

A police spokesman told public broadcaster NOS that the attack lasted several minutes before the perpetrator was finally overpowered by a passerby.

“I’m completely shaking. It could have been me,” a witness told Algemeen Dagblad.

Two of the five victims who were injured are from the United States, one from Poland, one from Belgium and one from the Netherlands. Two of them are still in serious condition.

The motive is still unclear.

The accident happened early on Thursday near the port of the Egyptian tourist resort of Hurghada.

At least one Swedish person was on board the tourist submarine that sank off the coast of Egypt on Thursday, local authorities say, according to the BBC.

On board were 45 tourists and five crew members. Six of the tourists died and the remaining 39 were rescued, according to the information. The dead are all Russians, according to the BBC.

The tourists are said to have come from Russia, Norway, Sweden and India.

The accident happened early on Thursday near the port of the Egyptian tourist resort of Hurghada.
