Ecuador tops murder list – has passed Mexico
Ecuador now has the highest murder rate in Latin America. An ongoing wave of violence linked to the drug trade has caused the country to pass Mexico, reports CNN based on figures from Insight Crime.
The geographical location, with Colombia to the north and Peru to the south where large amounts of cocaine are produced, has made Ecuador a transit country for smuggling.
Experts also point to corruption as a reason why the problems have not been curbed.
– Corruption is widespread, from police to the highest political level, and it facilitates smuggling and provides protection for criminal groups, says James Bargent at Insight Crime.
