Political situation in Israel
Yes to criticized reform in Israel – gives politics more power over the judiciary
Israel's parliament has voted yes to a controversial reform that gives politicians more power over the judiciary, Israeli media reports.
The reform means, among other things, that politicians, for the first time in the country's history, will gain power over the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court.
Critics say the reform will lead to a politicization of judicial power and that more power will be concentrated in the hands of those in power.
The opposition party Yesh Atid says that the reform "is not a change, but rather that it wipes out an entire system".
"The Israeli government has just approved a law with a single purpose – to ensure that judges are subordinated to the will of politicians", several opposition leaders wrote in a joint statement.
The reform was already on the agenda in 2023 and then caused major protests around Israel.
