Middle East Crisis Peace Talks

Trump Voters Skeptical of Iran Deal: “We Should Really Weaken Them”

The US ceasefire agreement with Iran is not going down well with a panel of 18 Trump voters who are regularly interviewed by Reuters. 14 of them are somewhat skeptical of the agreement.

“We have to really weaken the Iranian regime, not just give them a slap and then let them recover and rebuild their capacity,” says Terry Alberta, a pilot from Michigan.

Several of the panel members also believe that the Iran deal will be a liability for Republicans in the midterm elections.

At the same time, an Ipsos survey shows that only a quarter of Americans as a whole think the war in Iran has been worth the price.

Experts: The agreement could fall apart at any time

The agreement between Iran and the US is extremely sensitive and could collapse at any time. Andrea Dessi, a professor of international relations at the American University of Rome, told Al Jazeera.

Yesterday, both sides exchanged attacks that formally violated the ceasefire. According to Dessi, Iran and the United States are both trying to appear to be in control of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, both sides must be careful not to go too far.

“It is clear that it is in the interests of both Iran and the United States not to let this escalate into a full-scale conflict,” Dessi said.

Former intelligence officer Karen Gibson described the situation in a similar way on Fox News. She believes that Iran’s initial attack – which hit a Singapore-flagged ship without causing any major damage – was “well-calibrated.”

“They really don’t want to go back into that spiral of escalating violence,” she said.
