EU Commission proposes extended protection for Ukrainians

The EU Commission is proposing to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians who have fled to one of the EU countries until 2028, Reuters reports.

At the same time, the Commission also wants to withdraw the same right for Ukrainian men of military age. According to Ukrainian law, men are not allowed to leave the country as long as the war is ongoing.

- Today's proposal responds to the urgent needs of millions of Ukrainians fleeing Russia's illegal aggression. It also responds to Ukraine's defense needs, says Henna Virkkunen, Commissioner for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy.

The proposal must now be approved by the European Council before it can enter into force.

State of emergency in Crimea after Ukrainian attacks

The Russian government in occupied Crimea has declared a state of emergency after several Ukrainian airstrikes on the peninsula, AFP reports.

"This decision was made primarily to address economic issues," writes Russian-appointed governor Sergei Aksyonov on Telegram.

There are fuel shortages and power outages in Crimea, as Ukraine has attacked infrastructure and oil facilities in the area.
