Chess star proposed to become Hungarian president
Judit Polgar is considered one of the best female chess players of all time. Now she could also become Hungarian president.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar proposed on Monday that the former grandmaster take over the presidency, which is mainly ceremonial.
"Our country needs unity, peace and a president that all Hungarians can be proud of," writes Peter Magyar in a Facebook post. He adds that he will have a meeting with Polgar on Tuesday to formally ask if she wants to take on the role.
Judit Polgar has won five gold medals in the Chess Olympics and is an international chess grandmaster.
Hungary's parliament last week passed a constitutional amendment that will remove the current president, Tamás Sulyok, an ally of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
