German trial over Nord Stream sabotage in October

The trial in Germany of a Ukrainian man suspected of involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline will begin on October 14.

The trial is expected to last until February, the Hamburg court announced.

The 50-year-old man was arrested in Italy last year and later extradited to Germany. According to prosecutors, he used a false identity to rent the yacht that was allegedly used to carry out the attacks.

It was in September 2022 that leaks were discovered from the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. It was later confirmed that the pipelines had been blown up.

Another suspected Ukrainian man was arrested in August in Croatia, where he is reported to have taken part in filming the attack. The man is described as a sports diver.

A total of seven people are believed to have been involved in the sabotage.
