In a late announcement on Wednesday in the Royal Gazette, the Chulabhorn Royal Academy was given powers to act unilaterally to secure vaccines and act in the public’s interest on issues concerning the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Chulabhorn Institute and the Royal Academy are scientific research institutes, named after and chaired by HRH Princess Chulabhorn.
The announcement, which was ambiguously worded, could be interpreted to say that the institute would now be able to bypass government red-tape and bring it vaccines as it sees fit.
The announcement also gives the organizations sweeping powers to carry out work that would help the public interest as the third wave of the pandemic continues to wreck havoc on the country.
Analysts say that the order by the institute could be interpreted as a rebuke against the Prayut government. (Read more here)
The government has consistently dropped the ball in implementing public health measures to help stem the tide of Covid-19.
Most notably, the Prayut Chan-ocha administration failed to halt travel and lockdown the country during the Songkran Holidays which helped spread the pandemic throughout the Kingdom.
The government and the public health minister Anuthin Charnvirakul has also failed to act speedily to acquire vaccine, dragging its feet through the winter months until the pandemic’s third wave was already well under way.
