The Social Democrats will not grow if they continue to hide behind their election results. Sure they increased, but to the second worst election result in over 100 years.
If the years in opposition become nothing more than a continuation of this year's election campaign, S misses its chance to come back as a party the voters understand and know what they want.
When Magdalena Andersson announced her resignation as Prime Minister, she said that the Social Democrats are now in opposition and will continue to pursue their priority issues. You may remember them – turn over all the stones to reduce segregation and gang-related violence, take back control of welfare and climate change.
So the exact policy that just led to an election loss.
This year's election is funny that way. Those who won lost and those who lost won. The former government parties S and MP both advanced, and the Moderates and the Christian Democrats, who now form a government, lost voter support.
The only party that really won is the Sweden Democrats.
Of course it is difficult to win and lose at the same time, but the Social Democrats must at some point take off the blinders and think about why they did not get the opportunity to stay on.

It wasn't Magdalena Andersson, she had sky-high confidence among the voters. However, the strategy of betting an entire election campaign on her statesmanship was unsuccessful.
It was not a safe leader the voters wanted to see. They wanted to see change and it is almost a law of nature after two terms of office with the same government.
It is a difficult pedagogical pirouette to get a message about change from oneself. The party tried. They changed party leaders and leadership sets, but politics ran away from the Social Democrats. Gains in welfare did not become a hot election issue, shootings and gang violence were dominated by the political opponents and the climate debate was owned by the Green Party.
During the years in government, the Social Democrats have waved away the recurring criticism that the party lacked a story and a vision of what kind of society they really want. The party has waved away the criticism that also came from within the party that the January agreement and center collaborations had caused S to lose its political compass.
Many social democrats are of course sad and disappointed to lose government power, but it must be an even greater disappointment that the party does not see it as an opportunity to examine itself about how it happened.
Magdalena Andersson said in her farewell speech that she keeps the door open for Ulf Kristersson if his government documents do not hold together.
If the Social Democrats want to take back government power in four years, it is a thin strategy to hope that the SD will do it for the upcoming Kristersson government. Statesmanship must be paired with a political vision.
