Drought-stricken cities could be saved by trapped fog

Scientists in Chile believe that water from fog clouds could provide residents of the world's driest cities with clean drinking water, reports the BBC. The conclusion was reached after calculations of the situation in Alto Hospicio in the country's north.

The mountain town has extremely little rainfall, a measly five millimeters per year, but fog formed over the Pacific Ocean regularly blows over the mountains. There, the fog can be captured by fine-meshed nets and condensed into water droplets.

The method has previously been used in other parts of the world with similar conditions, but the researchers believe that it can be used on an even larger scale.
