Donald Trump pauses tariffs against Mexico.

Mexico is meeting the US and deploying 10,000 soldiers along the border, according to AFP.

The agreement is confirmed by Trump.

– It was a very friendly conversation, Trump writes on the Truth Social platform.

Donald Trump agrees to pause the introduction of trade tariffs on Mexico for a month.

The announcement comes from both Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and US President Donald Trump, after a long phone call on Monday.

– She agreed to immediately send 10,000 Mexican soldiers to the border between Mexico and the United States. These soldiers are specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into our country, Trump writes.

Mexican President Sheinbaum also confirms the number of soldiers and their task at the border.

President Donald Trump has said several times that the tariffs are partly a way to pressure Mexico and Canada to stop both refugee and drug smuggling across the countries' extensive borders.

No punitive tariffs

The suspension of the tariffs comes just hours before Trump's new presidential order for 25 percent punitive tariffs was to take effect.

– We also agreed to immediately suspend the upcoming tariffs for one month, when we will hold negotiations led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and high representatives from Mexico, Trump writes.

The agreement was made in a phone call with Trump, where the US president also promised to stop the smuggling of heavy weapons into Mexico.

Mexico has previously complained that the cartels' heavy armament comes from American manufacturers, which are smuggled across the border.

- We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty. We agreed on several things. I am sure that we will achieve good results during this month, says Sheinbaum about the upcoming negotiations.

Also called Trudeau

On Monday, the AP reports that Trump also called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss the tariffs and other issues affecting the countries' relationship.

No agreements were made in that call, but the message from Trump is that they are working to reach an agreement before Tuesday, when the tariffs take effect.

Trump writes on Truth Social that he will have another conversation with the Canadian Prime Minister later on Monday evening Swedish time.
