Macron: Trump must not be weak against Putin

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is to meet Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, says he will encourage Trump to be strong in negotiations with Putin.

– I will say: You must not be weak against Putin. That is not who you are, it goes against your brand and it is not in your interest, he says in a live broadcast on Instagram according to French media.

The French leader also says that he does not agree with Trump that Volodymyr Zelenskyj is a dictator.

– President Zelenskyj came to power through a free election, that is not the case for Vladimir Putin.

Planned Foreign Ministry film is seen by PR experts in advance

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is planning a campaign film on the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, writes Expressen. Employees in several countries are being asked to record a clip where they stand up and, among other things, use Ukrainian flags.

The plans are already facing criticism. Hampus Knutsson, crisis expert at the Wings PR agency, believes that support for Ukraine can be manifested in other ways. And media strategist Brit Stakston points out that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs needs to think differently in light of recent developments.

– What was said in Munich has changed the game plan, she says, referring to the speech by the American vice president.

New plan: Air force to “punish Russia”

Getting soldiers to a hypothetical peacekeeping force in Ukraine is a problem even for Europe’s largest countries. France and Britain have now started making plans to use fighter jets to a greater extent, sources tell the Financial Times.

The West has a great advantage over Russia in the air and would have a good ability to respond if there were serious violations of a ceasefire, a Western official tells the newspaper.

– It is a punitive method, to be able to punish Russia if necessary, says the official.

The same source adds at the same time that the point is to deter Russia so that it is not necessary.

These plans also need to be backed by the United States, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has previously said that Europe needs an American security guarantee in order to guarantee a ceasefire.

Analysis: Europe is shocked – should have been prepared

Trump's statements in which he blames Ukraine for the war do not come out of nowhere, writes The Guardian's Robert Tait in an analysis. He believes that Trump may have caused his own misconceptions by surrounding himself with people who have made statements to Russia's delight.

Last year, Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky was called "disgraceful" by Vice President JD Vance, and former adviser Steve Bannon has said he doesn't care what happens to Ukraine. As early as 2022, Trump's new right-hand man, Elon Musk, suggested that Ukraine should give up the annexed Crimean peninsula, and more recently, the Tesla owner has launched a personal attack on Zelensky.

CNN's Rob Picheta is surprised by how shocked European leaders seem to be by the changed US stance under Trump. For months, Trump's inner circle has shown an indifference to Ukraine's sovereignty, he writes.

Experts say that someone in Europe now needs to take on the leadership mantle, and mention France's Emmanuel Macron and Britain's Keir Starmer as likely candidates.

"But Europe is not known for its unity on defense," writes Picheta, pointing out that a number of European leaders already have domestic political headaches.
