Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warns of "regional war" if the US attacks.

He also dismisses the latest wave of anti-regime protests as something that "resembles a coup".

- They (the protesters) attacked the police, government centers, Revolutionary Guard centers, banks and mosques and burned the Koran. It was like a coup, says Khamenei according to the pro-regime news agency Tasnim.

He adds that the coup has been crushed.

Iran has been shaken by protests in the past month, during which thousands of activists have been killed, according to exile organizations. US President Donald Trump has threatened to take action because of the violence against the protesters. He recently said that a “massive war fleet” is heading towards Iran.

“The Americans should know that if they start a war, it will be a regional war this time,” Khamenei says.
