US chargé d'affaires Laura Dogu has arrived in the Venezuelan capital Caracas with the aim of reopening the US mission in the country.

Seven years ago, the US closed its embassy in Caracas following a decision by then-Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. But after Maduro was captured earlier this year, both countries have expressed a need to ease their relations.

On Saturday, Dogu arrived in the Venezuelan capital.

“My team and I are ready to work,” she said in a post published by the embassy on X.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil wrote in a post on Telegram that Dogu’s arrival in the country is part of a joint plan to “manage and resolve existing differences through diplomatic dialogue.”

A chargé d'affaires is the head of a diplomatic mission in the absence of a full ambassador.
