Trump points out shortcomings: "Not a very secure building"
Donald Trump is critical of the security arrangements at last night's journalists' dinner, writes the Washington Post. He believes that the Hilton hotel was flawed, and refers to the fact that he has previously been the victim of two assassination attempts.
- It is not a very secure building.
The BBC's North American correspondent, Gary O'Donoghue, testifies that adjacent roads were closed for several hours but that security once in place was not very extensive.
"The man at the door just took a quick look at my ticket from what must have been about two meters away".
According to the Washington Post, the suspected shooter, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, managed to get through a Secret Service check on the floor above the hall where the dinner was held. At the time, he was armed with knives, a pistol and a shotgun.
Allen was checked in as a guest at the hotel.
Minister: It seems that Trump was the shooter's target
It is likely that Donald Trump was the intended target of the suspected perpetrator Cole Tomas Allen in last night's shooting. This is what Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche says in an interview with NBC News.
- It seems that he targeted people who work in the administration, including the president himself.
Earlier in the day, reports abounded in the American media that Allen, who was arrested after the shooting, had admitted that he wanted to shoot people from the Trump administration.
- We believe that he acted alone, says Blanche.
During the day, investigators have conducted a search of the shooter's home in California. The Attorney General says that the theory is that Allen is believed to have made his way to Washington via train from Los Angeles.
Terrorism researcher's biggest worry: A canceled midterm election
Swedish terrorism researcher Hans Brun warns that last night's attempted attack in Washington could inspire others to commit similar acts.
- What worries me most right now is that there will be so much chaos and commotion in the US that President Trump will cancel the autumn midterm elections, Brun tells TV4Nyheterna.
This is the third thwarted assassination attempt against or near Trump in less than two years. Last autumn, the high-profile right-wing debater Charlie Kirk was also shot dead during a performance.
Hans Brun says that he is unfortunately not surprised by the new attempted attack, given the harsh political climate in the US.
The attack on the gala — it's about the matter
- A gunman stormed into the annual journalists' dinner in Washington on Saturday night and fired shots, which led to chaos and the evacuation of Donald Trump and several ministers.
- Around 2,500 guests, including Swedish journalists, were in the venue when the shooting broke out. Many took cover under tables while heavily armed police intervened.
- The shooter, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, was arrested at the scene with several weapons. According to CBS News sources, he has admitted that the target was representatives of the Trump administration.
- A Secret Service agent was hit by a bullet in his protective vest but is said to be fine. No one else was injured.
- The motive is still unknown. Cole Tomas Allen is expected to be charged and appear in court on Monday.
