After the Norwegian royal funeral, King Harald's body will be taken to the royal mausoleum in the basement under the palace church at Akershus Fortress in Oslo. There, he will rest in a sarcophagus next to those where King Haakon VII and Queen Maud, as well as King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha, rest.

The double sarcophagus, which also has space for Queen Sonja, will be displayed for the first time in connection with the funeral. In 2024, the government allocated 20 million to build it and gave the assignment to architect Kjetil Trædal Thorsen.

When VG asked the court this spring whether the sarcophagus was ready, they replied that they could not reveal anything before the death of the king or queen.

- Details about the design, artistic expression and choice of materials will not be known before then, said Guri Ofstad Varpe, head of communications at the court.

King Harald is currently lying in state at the palace in Oslo. The date of the funeral has not yet been determined. His father, King Olav V, was buried 13 days after his death in 1991.

King Haakon to address the nation at 7:00 PM tonight

For the first time as king, Norway's Haakon VIII will address the nation at 7:00 PM tonight, the Norwegian court announced in a press release.

The speech follows a historical tradition and marks the beginning of the succession to the throne.

It is known that Haakon will continue with the motto "Everything for Norway", the same message that his father King Harald, grandfather King Olav V and great-grandfather King Haakon VII have used since 1905.
