Polls open in Iceland – referendum on EU
It is uncertain until the last moment – will Iceland resume negotiations on EU membership? The opinion situation ahead of today's referendum is very even.
At 11 am, Swedish time, the polls opened.
The opinion situation has swung to a slight overweight for the no side during the election campaign. Voter turnout is predicted to be high, so the vote count could be a shocker.
– It is quite even, but I am always optimistic, says Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, who hopes for a yes vote, to AFP.
The referendum is only advisory and Icelanders are not voting on EU membership directly, but on whether the country should resume the accession negotiations that were put on hold in 2013. The polling stations close at midnight, Swedish time.
