Nigerian military: Gradually regaining control
Nigerian military says it is “gradually regaining control” after an attempted coup in the capital, Niamey, AFP reports.
In a televised statement, Defense Minister Salifou Mody urges the public to “remain calm and return to daily life.”
According to the military, a group of soldiers attempted a coup d’état. Gunfire was heard in several places in the city. Among other things, they tried to enter the presidential palace, but were held back by the president’s bodyguards.
The soldiers are also said to have tried to take colleagues hostage at a barracks.

Fighting is said to have broken out outside the presidential palace in Niger’s capital, Niamey, AFP reports. The president’s bodyguards say they have repelled “rebels from the armed forces” who are trying to enter the palace.
Explosions and gunfire were also heard at a military base near Niamey airport. In a statement on social media, the military said the country's defense and security forces had been mobilized.
Niger has been ruled by a military junta for three years. Islamist groups have long waged an armed resistance, fighting that has intensified recently, writes TT.
