Fighting at presidential palace in Niger – signs of coup d’état

Fighting has reportedly broken out outside the presidential palace in Niger’s capital Niamey, reports AFP. The president’s bodyguards say they have repelled “rebels from the armed forces” who are trying to enter the palace.

Explosions and gunfire have also reportedly been heard at a military base near Niamey’s airport. In a statement on social media, the military says the country’s defense and security forces have been mobilized.

Niger has been ruled by a military junta for three years. Islamist groups have long waged an armed resistance struggle, fighting that has intensified recently, writes TT.

Fighting has broken out in Niger's capital Niamey between the president's bodyguard and units of the military who have rebelled, security sources told AFP.

Gunfire has been heard across several parts of the city.

The rebels took soldiers hostage at a military base and tried to take the presidential palace, but were driven back even though gunfire is still ongoing, according to security sources.

The military has now "gradually regained control" of the situation, according to a statement by Defense Minister General Salifou Mody read out on state television.

Niger's leader Abdourahamane Tiani has ruled the African country at the head of a military junta for three years. Islamist groups have long waged an armed resistance, fighting that has intensified recently.
